Default What "Moz" thinks of fans

Alot has been said about Moz (also known as Morrissey) thinks about his fans. It was stated that he does not like to meet his fans, which is undeniablly not true.
Fans are what make the music, after all. Being famous is never easy. Rushing to touch you, grabbing you without knowing you, only wanting to have lust for you because of some false icon title.

My impression is he doesn't mind meeting fans in a normal setting, like being approached in the street for example. I don't think he likes the whole hysteria of meeting them en masse though. See how quickly he gets away after a gig to avoid the mob outside the venue. I don't think he likes it when people get overwrought and that tends to happen when people get into a large group. I've seen the videos of people screaming at him as he comes out of venues to get into his car. I think he prefers a well mannered chat.

Moz likes his fans. I think he understands that the connection between him and the fans is very special... he knows we have always been (and will always be) here for him and that we do love his music.

It's funny because some people seem to miss how special this is, or maybe they´re jealous of it, I don´t know. I just came across a Pet Shop Boys interview where Moz and his audience were mentioned. Here is what Neil Tennant had to say:

""Morrissey wants the audience to throw themselves at him, that's what he wants; with us there is more of a dignity thing. We would be embarrassed by that behaviour, and we don't really want to be embarrassed."

now...do you know ANYONE who would like to throw himself/herself at the Pet Shop Boys?

YES!!!! ME!!!!!! Really, I'm serious! I'm a longtime PSB fan (since 19 years) and was terrible in love with Neil Tennant when I was 13 and 14 and 15... and so on.

Do you know the source of that interview? I'd really like to read that.

I know what the PSB think of the fan situation and they don't like this hysterical behaviour that's why I would never enter the stage on a concert. We all in PSB community know that and that's why nobody would ever enter the stage.

When I met Chris Lowe (keyboards) in a shopping mall I didn't take a picture because I know Chris doesn't like it and usually he rans away when he sees a fan but on this special day he was in a very good mood and I didn't want to spoil that. Moz on the other hand would be disappointed if a fan wouldn't take a picture. On one of the last concerts he said that he went to Düsseldorf and nobody recognized him.

I've never seen a closer "relationship" between an arstist and the fans as with Moz and I adore him for that. That he has this understanding for us because we are waiting outside the venue for hours and just want to be close to him. And that he says his security they should not to be too strong with us. I've never seen that before. Oh, and I've never seen an artist who collect the fan mail and keep it in the pocket to read it later.

Yes, I this he likes his fans as he was a huge fan by himself when he was young and he knows how it is to adore someone.

He does not want to have people throw themselves at him, he only wishes for people to connect with the music, to be freed by it...........

It wasn't underwear, actually but baby clothes (this man is 'mostly' gay, nobody knows that exactly). So he was standing there with rompers in his hands!!! I've never thought to see him like that! But it was for his niece and his sister and mother were with him. And yes, I didn't take a picture because I know he hates that and I respect that. I've seen him on so many occasions so it doesn't matter. At one concert we were waiting at the stage door and Neil Tennant was surrounded by many, many fans and Chris was waiting at the car. Me and my friend was standing next to him but didn't see him. My friend, with a camera in his hands, turned his head to him, Chris saw it and disappeared quickly in the car. He really hates it. I can understand it because I don't like to be photographed as well.

Here is was I can tell you from my own experience as a fan meeting Morrissey. Enough time has passed so I feel I share it.

I grew up in Los Angeles, and I first meet him at his hotel on the Meat is Murder tour. I was 16 he was in his early 20s. He was just sitting in the lobby of the hotel. He jokingly said he was waiting for other fans to stop by but I was the only one, so he would have to make due with me. He was very nice, he asked me tons of questions, what was my favorite Smiths song, what was my least favorite, do you think the Smiths will be big in America, etc. He signed everything I brought with me, about 6 records and a poster, tour book. Then after about 15 min. Someone came in a car to pick him up.

I met him 2 more times in L.A. in the 80s Similar experience, always asked lots of questions. I met him for a 4th time in 1991, when he was shooting the November Spawned a Monster video. He seemed to have loads of time then, he previously went shopping with other 2 fans, and when he got back he was signing tons of stuff for them and I joking asked if he wanted to go get something to eat. He said he had plans but asked if I wanted to meet him at a pub later that night, I said I couldn't because I was still 20yrs at the time. But I came back the next day, and again he seemed to have plenty of time on his hands and wanted to go to a punk collectible shop in Orange County and asked if I could take him. I said sure. This was probally the best meeting I have had with him. At this time he was still hung up on the Smiths breakup, and asked lots and lots of questions. I also noticed he was kinda cheap, very price sensitive. I asked him about it, and he said "I don't know how long this will last without Johnny"

After this is where I consider Morrissey died for me.

The next 4 times I met him was in Los Vegas, San Francisco and in 2x LA during the Kill Uncle tour.

In LA there were about 15 people waiting for him, he signed for them all, didn't talk much, posed for a few pictures and refused to sign any Smiths stuff.

In S.F. there were about 5 people waiting for him, he didn't sign for anyof them, and didn't say a peep to any of them, just got on the bus and headed for Sac.

In Vegas he signed for about 20 people, but again didn't say much didn't sign any Smiths stuff.

Back in L.A. I caught him at the Hotel alone, he signed a few Morrissey solo items for me, I already had all my Smiths stuff signed, but asked why he stopped signing, he said "don't ever mention the Smiths to me again"
He wasn't mean when he said it, but he was changed. This did not seem like the same man who asked me a million questions about the Smiths just a couple years ago.

Later on around the time Your Arsenal came out he was on MTV with his band and said that he liked his new band much better than the Smiths. With that my heart sunk. I was very bitter about it for awhile, I didn't bother going to the Your Arsenal Tour, I felt his new band where the "hired help" and substandard and thought that Morrissey was self-diluted at the time. I later warmed up.

Needless to say this was the last time I was able to meet Morrissey, security became tighter at shows, I tried a few times to meet him at his house in LA but I always seemed to miss him, I caught his gardner once, and he told me that he doesn't meet fans at the house anymore, I guess he was in a hurry one day and didn't have time for a fan at his house and the fan kicked his car and dented it. I saw the car the story was true. I tried a few more times with no luck. I also seen interviews where he complained about fans trying to meet him at his home. So I gave up on the idea.

Now he is living in Italy, it may actually be eaiser to meet him in LA, It's less intrusive meeting someone at a Hotel then at their home... He may be more receptive.

    Hope you found it interesting...

Of course! Thanks for telling us your story! I think it's very interesting that he didn't want to speak about The Smiths after the split. It must hurt him in a huge way. And I think it's very interesting that he was cheap. Maybe it changed these days.

    From the mentioned interview:

Tennant quietly chuckles to himself, and then adds, "Although my favourite audience are screaming girls, though we don't get them any more. I used to think it was great because we could pretend to be the Beatles for a night."

Neeeillll! I am screaming all the time at concerts!!! Why don't you see me? Gggggrrr. On the next concert I could hold a sign with "Neil, I'm a screaming girl!" on it. But I've seen that before in his face that he likes when the audience is screaming.

I read somewhere that Moz was on a concert of A-ha in the 80ies and he saw all the screaming girls in the audience and he said he didn't like it. Hmmmmm. Very intersting....

Kumo, i think its great that you met up with him so many times

But the whole business in LA with fans waiting outside of his house, i find to be a bit out of order. I can understand why he left!

yes, he says that in that cute interview with muriel gray - you know the one - where he giggles and giggles :-))))))
he says that he thought it was an indecent, disrespectful squeal - that completely drowned out the musicians - and that he wouldn't like such an audience at all.

YEEES!!! Haaaahaaaa! LOL! THIS is the cutest interview I have ever seen! He was so silly sometimes and easy. It's fascinating what kind of women he does like. But I know another interview with the both of them where he was calmer and more shy. Maybe it depended on the loction and how private they were.

Gabi! Which one is that? Where or how can I see it?? is that when he says: "I've always written about hanky-panky?" Is it on You Tube?

    Thanks!
