Five from the Archive

Last night I stopped listening to 'Simply Thrilled Honey' long enough to actually have a rummage around the darkest recesses of my 'record' collection. Enthralled with my own good taste, I picked 'five from the archive' that you've probably not heard before although I'm sure some of you will look at one or two of these song titles in a knowingly arch fashion.

I delibrately picked non indie music (since the internet is swamped with 'new') as well as some odd picks!

1. DICK DALE AND THE DEL TONES - Surf Beat

You can't beat a bit of Dick Dale and this is one of the best ones in my humble opinion. Love the drums on this and the 'aquatic' guitar playing is impecable as you'd expect.

2. SLY FOX - Hoo Doo Say

Some techincal flaws perhaps but I still maintain Sly Fox had the best voice ever. Imagine how great it would be if you could open your mouth and make a noise like that? As if the mans lungs aren't great enough Ike Turner was in his backing band therefore guarenteeing double awesomeness.

Incidentally I've noticed that this track sounds a lot like one of the all time great 'prison' songs, Richard Berry's 'Big Break'. Unfortunately I don't have a CD copy of that particular track or I'd stick it up for comparison but it's well worth tracking down if you can find it.

3. IVOR CUTLER - Rubber Toy

Until his death last year Ivor Cutler was Glasgow's most eccentric old Jew. Now it's a 59 year old 'wacky' accountant from Clarkston. Things just haven't been the same since 2006...

4. STEPHEN YERKEY - Mood Swing Era

This is lifted from my favourite album of 2006. About half of it passes close to the orbit of DBT's and that southern rock sound but it also has a strong jazz influence as this track suitably demonstrates. If you could buy his album so he can afford to make a new one that'd be great, sez I.

5. KNIFEHANDCHOP - Used To Be A Raver

Not only is this fantastic in itself it is also guarenteed to offend and horrify almost every living human being on Earth including all 'proper' music fans and those upset by swearing and sexual deviancy. And if those people don't need offending I don't know who does.
