youre welcome
after I posted that I went back and came across some other drawings of yours, and theyre all very good, but i noticed a little bit of improvement in each one. this last one you posted is definitely the best one so far. I've been drawing (mostly faces too) since I was about 13 or 14, and its amazing that I can look through my drawings over the years and with each one you can see just a little more improvement. practice certainly does make perfect.![]()
I agree completely. I'm 22 and I started drawing around about the same time as you did, 13, 14. I have kept all of my drawings and when I look back I can see a huge difference. I find it really rewarding because, like you say when you just look at your drawings in the order that you do them you can't really see much of a difference.
I think having talent obviously helps but I really do believe that if you have the patients and determination and you’re willing to put the practise in you can achieve anything.
And I think even if you do have a tremendous talent, that talent needs to be nurtured and developed. So I agree practise definitely makes perfect![]()
“I can’t sing anymore, I’m too happy”
Tbevie, this is terrific!
I'm curious. You chose to work on a colored sheet of paper, yet you opted to use white pencil for highlighting instead of using the color paper underneath the charcoal. Just a thought but, did you ever try covering a sheet of colored paper with charcoal and then "drawing" the highlights in your image using a clay eraser?
It's challenging because it's a different way of working, but the result could be very dramatic. Maybe I'll do one as an example.
I like it ... however... it reminded me of:

Hi there mozmic_dancer,
That’s a really good idea. I never thought about doing that. I think for this picture, in particular the contrast between the shadows and the highlights was so great that I felt I needed the white pencil to really capture it.
But I’ll defiantly try that with my next drawing. Thanks a lot for the advice![]()
“I can’t sing anymore, I’m too happy”
Hello,
I'm new on this site but as a big Morrissey/Smiths fan I thought this forum (and this thread specifically) could be an good place to post this...
I'm a 29-year old graphic designer from Belgium and lately I've been working on art designs that are inspired by my favourite artists.
My latest work includes an animated video, inspired by The Smiths' 1984 song 'Suffer Little Children' and by The Moors Murders (1963-1965, in Manchester).
I created my own interpretation of these sad events in a series of drawings. By cutting and pasting these into a ppt-file and setting it to the song, I created this moody but respectful piece... (words/music: Morrissey & Marr) - (design: BProost)
Hope you can appreciate. The link is:

PS: Other animated videos I made (for songs by Eels, another great band) are here:

Enjoy
bartproost, those were wonderful videos. I liked the "Suffer Little Children" video but the Eels' "Flower" was magnificent. Thanks for posting them. I'm sure we'll see your work in a bookshop someday soon.
Thank you, bartproost. I enjoyed your videos. The drawings are powerful.
Do I understand you correctly that these were ppt files (PowerPoint slides) made into video? How clever.
I've read somewhere that David Byrne from the Talking Heads likes to use PowerPoint to create his "presentations."

Yes, indeed; these are ppt-presentations converted in to Avi-files. Glad to hear people here liked them!I'm quite proud of them too...
And as for Eels: Marl Oliver Everett is obviously related to Morrissey as a lyricist: the way they mix melancholy and self-depricating wit in their lyrics is just genious - in my opinion. And great inspiration, as can be seen on this thread...![]()
I don't know what version of PowerPoint you are using, but Mac:PowerPoint 11.0 at my job that offers some interesting Pre-set Animation effects under the Slide Show menu; plug-ins like "crawl in", "unfold", and "random" as well as about 60 others. I can compress in a folder and upload them for you at a host site, if you are interested.
However, depending on your software version, I cannot guareentee your version will support or recognize them.
Those are all really fantastic. Sometimes at 3 in the morning I assume I can draw. The results are far too embarassing to post here.

PS My best friend is sitting behind my saying every Moz drawing I've done makes him look like a zombie.
@mozmic_dancer:
I work on a PC (used to work on Macs, but don't anymore), a Dell Dimension 4600 (Windows XP) so I don't know if your macpt 11.0 would be compatible? I doubt it... Maybe I can get hold of a PC-version through a collegue of mine. I'll see...
Thanks for offering!![]()
Latest drawing
I went back to my old style for this one, pencil and charcoal on white cartridge paper. But I wanted to try something a bit different so I shaded around some of the darker areas with a blue watercolour pencil. I’m not sure if it works though. I think it’s ended up looking like he’s wearing eye make up.

I like it, but I suppose dark paper gives better depths (my teacher told me to only paint on black for the type of drawings I was making). For the blue shade, it is ok, but lacks perhaps a bit more on the brow, left picture side (eye on the same side looks a bit strange too).
Do you pick a photo on the spot or plan in a longer time?
Hi there,
Thanks for the advice. I think you’re right about the left eye I think both eyes need a bit of work actually. I was actually planning to do a bit of the blue watercolour on the brow and more on the face but when I discovered that it wasn’t really working the way I wanted to I decided to just leave it the way it was. Maybe I should have carried on though.
It depends what kind of mood I’m in or what style I want to draw in. I have a massive folder on my pc, full of Moz pics so I usually just go through it and pick a few that I think might suite the style.

I'm no pro, just had some good time (teacher sighs, and a look on her face *poor child*).
The other eye's ok, and the color just for the brow, where that shadow is.
Now that I looked more at it, I really like the mood.
