The Lazarus Effect

For all of you who remember "Flatliners" this is more or less an updated modern version with some over dramatic horror added to it. Had they chosen to avoid the film spinning out of control towards the end this could have been amazing. I love how they stick to science and facts as I recently happened to read about some of the things mentioned in this film.

The idea behind this must of course come from the cryo industry projects and the idea of people believing one day science will have become so advanced they can wake the dead and cure all diseases and erase death. The film sends a message that all type of ideas and research that we may now discard might become facts and science in the future as most of the big discoveries we have seen over the years have come from mistakes and ideas and all kinds of weird situations and coincidences.

There is the usual debate between sceptics and believers in this film and even catholicism is thrown into it. I guess the message is that to be able to create something new we need to keep an open mind and avoid falling into the trap of believing we have now come as far as we can reach which you sometimes can blame many scientists for as they prefer to defend their views and knowledge rather than open doors to new discoveries and ideas.

I hope this is the last film I see where the eyes of a character are turned dark as coal.

The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby : Them

Despite having checked the details about this I am still not sure if this is the latest of a part of three films. I just found it weird and it struggles to keep the tempo up and is filled with dialogue that tries to be witty but just ends up being dry. The only good thing about it is that it portrays NYC in a slighter less cool way than films set there usually do. It is a very complicated sort of love story and yet again at least one face from the comedy world feature in it which is a new trend of late as perhaps comedy films are not made as much as dramas like this.

In Sickness and In Health

Here we have another swedish comedy by the same people behind the popular comedy "Santa is the father of all the children". This is about a wedding in a posh place and all the couples different problems that come to the surface. This is really bad compared to the other mentioned comedy and never manages to create the same atmosphere or contact with the various characters. The only impressive thing about this film is the cast cause most of swedens most well known names seem to be in it but they are just reduced to delivering punchlines that manages to miss the point and does not make you laugh.

Jackie & Ryan

Awful western inspired music in this one about a free spirit finding his way in life by riding long distance trains and playing his music. He ends up bumping into a woman in Idaho and the usual romantic drivel follows.

I watched this thinking that Katherine Heigl looks like the Charlize Theron character in the film "Monster" so the romantic part in this film was kind of off putting to say the least. You know how this film is gonna pan out from the start and it should have had the title Idaho with an "e" at the end.

A Most Violent Year

Another NYC mob related drama about a man fighting for his life to make it big in the trucking and oil business. 1981 seems to have been a more violent year in the NYC area and this drama made me think of the people you see in shows like "Real Housewives of New Jersey" who I suspect can relate to this film and the struggles to make money and a life in a place so controlled by the mob. This is one of those rare films that does not portray people that use violence as some fearless people but instead the intensity of using violence and what it does to people is very authentic. It is mostly slow paced but that just adds to the heavy feel of the film and it was a pleasure to watch the acting.

The Kingdom

Totally missed this one when it came out many years ago so it was nice to watch it now. Packed with top actors this is perhaps the best film I have seen that tackles the situation in the middle east and how oil has been behind all that goes on there. It starts with a long historical look back on the impact of oil and as many other films it of course mentions 9/11. Very well made when it comes to the action scenes and the film claims that the FBI are on the scene after every terror act in the middle east so if that really is the case it was news to me.

http://www.swehd.com/beyond-the-lights-2014/beyond-the-lights-2014-video_2b288ca6f.html

Beyond the Lights

This is the best romantic film I have ever seen although some might claim it is a ripoff of the Costner and Houston classic "The Bodyguard". About a Brixton girl and her mother pushing her to become a famous singer but fame and money just makes her lose herself and she falls in love with the cop saving her from suicide. Minnie Driver is fantastic as the career mother controlling her daughters life and Gugu Mbatha-Raw is a new face and name to me and she is simply made for this film as the lost poor little rich girl singer.

The music lifts this film and is just perfection and it is rare to see films about sports or music that seem real and relevant but this really is. I guess the white rap dude in this film could be about Eminem and the british black singer could well be Rihanna minus the heritage of course. If you watched "50 Shades of Grey" and thought that was good then watch this one cause this is just film and acting perfection. This is the sort of film that deserves more mentions and attentions than it got and if you miss it you will be robbed off a great viewing experience.

The New Girlfriend

With Caitlyn Jenner in mind this french drama was perfect viewing. It is about not being able to hide who you really are. The story is about two women who became friends at school at a young age and when one of them dies it makes her friend remember the promise she made to look after her friends child and husband. Little does she know who her friends husband really is or wants to be.

It is a fairly typical french film in many ways and very much in touch with the old film culture of the country. The music adds to the emotions and storyline but the music of Katy Perry just did not feel right for me somehow but the rest of the music is in tradition with what you come to expect from a french drama.

When other dramas touch on a topic like this it is usually quite easy to know what will happen but this one surprised me in a positive way. It manages to deal with a complicated sexuality without falling into the usual traps and actually leaves all doors open as things like this can be more complicated than most tend to realise.

Johan Falk : Lockdown

The swedish action series about the policeman of the special forces continues and this time the police traitor who has been tipping the mob off is exposed and all hell breaks lose. This one gets better with each episode and they also killed off the only annoying character in it. This episode in the series tied together the pieces which is quite complicated so no film series to fall asleep to.

Northern Soul

Saved this for a rainy day and today it was raining cats and dogs. Not a fan of soul at all or this tacky scene but it does make you realise how northern England became a place for other values and less critical thinking and the anything goes attitude that perhaps soon will be the demise of the place.

For me this is not at all about the music or dancing cause the message is that you should go for the things you are passionate about and makes you happy in life. Life cannot be about studying hard for everyone and working with something that destroys your soul as for some life is about other values and I can identify with that. This could have been about football fans or people climbing mountains or anything else filled with passion to fight off the boring world most spend their life living having to achieve things not for themselves but to please others around them to fit in and you all know who you are.

Maybe this english film genre has run its course by now as it feels a bit outdated and perfected as the english tend to have a very set way of seeing themselves wether it is the past or the present. Sometimes I wish a film about the english could just relax a bit and not be so full of posers but that is of course what the english tend to be most of the time as they just have to be seen and heard all the time.

It reminded me of how people back then, even in my youth, were fascinated by Bruce Lee which always surprised me since you always cure someone like him with spasms with a loaded gun.

American Hustle

Waited quite some time to see this and was fairly disappointed in that the female actors just about managed to save the awful acting by the men in this. Christian Bale seems to concentrate on his acting more than his obsession with his body or perhaps he could get a new job with all that losing and adding weight talent. When Robert De Niro enters for a brief spell in this it is like he pulled down the pants of all the other actors and showed the difference in class.

It is quite sad to see how the Oscar jury is so openly biased that a bad film like this was even considered when you have so many other great films to choose from. As an example any of the releases from Denmark would have been a much more appropriate choice than this one but we all know why they chose this one instead.

Friends With Benefits (2011)

I was cajoled into appropriating this movie on Sunday afternoon. My fears were fully realised very quickly. Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis star as two high flying oxygen thieves who fall for each other while Timberlake is continually and inexplicably headhunted by the world's major corporations. By the time the first flash mob showed up I was gnawing my own knees. Whatever happened to flash mobs?

It is the sort of movie which makes you wonder if ISIS have a point. I didn't just delete it after watching, because that seemed insufficiently thorough, so I shredded it using a programme which runs the same level of secure deletion as NATO. Thirty-seven passes, each more joyous than the last. Die, you horrible film, die.

It wasn't quite as bad as Sweet November, but it wasn't far off. 1/10 because of the fragrant Mila Kunis.

The Stranger

This vampire film is strangely poetic and impressive since it is a category I do not normally appreciate at all. It's just something about it that draws you into it without it being in any way perfect. It just shows that sometimes less is more and that adds something that overacting and effects cannot bring into a film. The haunting breathing through mask sound here and there gave me Jason vibes.

Child 44

Ever since I heard about this film I have been waiting to see it and I was not disappointed. Yes, you get the silly spoken english with russian accent in this one and the overall feel of the film is in many ways a repeat of many other films set either in Russia or nazi Germany but this one grows over the just over 2 hours it lasts. Based of course on a trilogy the theme is how Russia did not wanna admit that murders took place in their oh so perfect communist society described as a heaven.

The cast is impressive and whenever Paddy Considine turns up in a film you know you are in for something special. Swedish director Daniel Espinosa is now making big time movies after he made a series of popular films in his native country and he handles this story with a lot of respect and care. Even Ridley Scott has been involved in this one. This is so good on so many levels and is based on the notorious russian serial killer Andrej Tjikatilo who used the railway network to find his many victims including children.

I just hope Espinosa would drop Joel Kinnaman whom he worked with for his first major success cause to me his face and acting does not suit this film at all.

http://dreamfilmhd.org/movies/details/683243743-big-game/

Big Game

Samuel L. Jackson as a black american president onboard Air Force One shot down over northern Finland. This is almost like a family adventure film with a young finnish boy getting caught up in the terror act as he is about to prove his manhood as a hunter for his father in a ritual passed on since generations. This is amazingly shot in many ways and the scenery is simply stunning. This film has a theory about the Air Force One escape capsule used to save the president in case of emergency although I guess what it looks like and how it is separated from the plane will probably stay a top secret.

http://dreamfilmhd.org/movies/details/683243647-the-longest-ride/

The Longest Ride

One of the better romantic films I have seen simply cause of the amazing acting by Alan Alda. Clint Eastwoods son Scott is in this one as the rodeo star meeting the student girl with plans for a future in the New York gallery world. As always in a romantic film love clashes with reality and expectations and other struggles and the modern day love story goes hand in hand with an older tale of love seen through the letters and flashbacks of the Alan Alda character. A very powerful film that does not entirely manage to avoid the expected cheesy parts we always get in romantic films but it does better than most others I have seen and was a pleasure to watch.

Andy Warhol's Heat is "a remake of Sunset Boulevard."

The youtubers mostly hate it but I loved it. Not Safe For Work, but why are you watching movies at work? Joe Dallesandro and Sylvia Miles star. "Some of these people around here are downright disgusting." Every Morrissey fan should try to watch this. Sleazy fun.

http://dreamfilmhd.org/movies/details/683243750-belle-and-sebastian/

Belle & Sebastian

No, this is not about the boring overrated scottish band. This is a fantastic french film set in the french alps in the 40's during the nazi occupation. It is about a boy and his friendship with a big dog dubbed "The Beast" by the locals accused of killing sheep. Great camera work and acting and the amazingly cute boy and the dog will remain with you for a long time.

Many of the locations it was filmed at in the french alps reminded me of the crash site for the Germanwings plane which felt sort of eerie. Maybe the best film I have seen dealing with the nazis without letting that completely take over and dominate the film. Even the music in it adds a lot to the film.

http://dreamfilmhd.org/movies/details/5-alska-mig-igen/

The Vow

Channing Tatum was made for these films walking around showing off in a cowboy shirt and playing the not so qualified dude who hooks up with the poor little rich girl from the posh family. As this is based on real events it is a great romantic film about a married couple involved in a car accident that leaves the woman losing her memory. It's a very professionally made film that you expect with such a cast and even has some great music including The National playing "England" and swedish babes Robyn and Lykke Li. It is however the ending song that happens to be my all time favourite song by The Cure that gives this film its perfect ending.

http://dreamfilmhd.org/movies/details/683243875-johan-falk-17-slutet/

Johan Falk : The End

So this story comes to an end and as a viewer you better make sure you remember what happened like way back to be able to catch up with the latest events. I don't know but this lacks a lot of things to make it feel interesting and the acting is almost too robotic to feel real. Since the director has been doing a lot to close down streaming sites online maybe he should turn his efforts to making films with actors that lifts the story.

http://dreamfilmhd.org/movies/details/683243877-before-i-go-to-sleep/

Before I Go To Sleep

Nicole Kidman as a woman who has lost her memory. This is old styled thriller with sound effects meant to make the hearts of the audience skip a beat. I almost got a Alfred Hitchcock feel from watching this film set in London. It is full of twists and turns but sadly the end is too simple without a major twist like you would expect from a film like this. Nice to see Colin Firth as a not so pleasant man in this after all the many films he made playing the same likeable guy over and over again.

http://dreamfilmhd.org/movies/details/683243819-a-kiss-and-a-promise/

A Kiss and a Promise

For being a b-movie made for tv this was good in a strange way. It is based on real events about a killer who ran a B&B in a quiet american town with his wife while at the same time having a failed local male writer staying who was also his lover. This film manages to create a sick vibe that many other films about serial killers do not manage to create. It has totally sick scenes but also made me laugh here and there. Some moments in this film have this feeling you get from a really expensive well made film but goes from that to a total b-movie feel but I don't know if that is a bad thing as it more or less adds something chilling to the film.

http://swefilm.tv/watch/far-from-the-madding-crowd_t0toy/

Far From The Madding Crowd

Based on the novel this starts off in 1870 and is a costume drama with dialogue that at times is more like the one you get at a theatre. It is a triangle love drama where three men all fall for the same woman who is more than a bit undecided over whom if any she fancies. None of the actors stand out in this one and overall it's an ok film that probably wanted to be a different kind of romantic story but in the end it falls for the same old outcome we've seen so many times before.

http://swefilm.tv/watch/kidnapping-mr-heineken_t0to7/

Kindapping Mr. Heineken

I actually had not heard about this story at all so it was completely new to me so when I read about this film I could not wait for it. Set in 80's Amsterdam it tells the real life story about how some friends decided to kidnap the brewery magnate Freddy Heineken. The cast is mostly british except for Heineken's chauffeur played by swedish actor David Dencik and the film is also directed by swede Daniel Alfredsson.

Jim Sturgess and Sam Worthington play the main characters who after their time in jail became some sort of ganglords. This is perhaps the film where you get to see less of Anthony Hopkins compared to many other films he's been in but he does well as usual as Mr. Heineken trying to stay upbeat in his padded makeshift cell. Well filmed giving an early 80's feel and as always a filmed based on real events rarely disappoint.

for fun we continued the theme with legend. next some edition of blade runner though were stretching it there i think

http://dreamfilmhd.org/movies/details/683244103-the-congress/

The Congress

The first film that turns into a cartoon that I found fascinating. Not sure I am able to describe this film but it is about an actress in Hollywood and the very futuristic vision of film making. There is criticism of a lot of things in this one and one of those films that will make people view it in so many ways. The end is powerful and sad in a very beautiful way.

http://swefilm.tv/watch/mad-max-fury-road_iffe9/

Mad Max : Fury Road

Was not sure that I was going to watch this so it took me a few weeks to finally do so and I was surprised that this summer no brainer entertained me somehow. It was of course ages ago since I saw the previous one and of course with time technology has made it possible to do all sorts of funny things. Charlize Theron and her ice cold personality is like made for this film and she is now the new ice queen ahead of both Nicole Kidman and Angelina Jolie. For any fans out there who think they are devoted to these films I would like to tell them about the russian bike gang "The Night Wolves" who are closely tied to russian president Putin who gave the leader a medal and money to build a replica of a lot of the vehicles seen in these films and also built a Mad Max style club for the bikers.

http://dreamfilmhd.org/movies/details/804-straw-dogs/

Straw Dogs

One of those films I missed when it came out and was in many ways a nice surprise. It uses a quite old technique seen in many films where the weird mood just keeps building as the man who is a stranger to the southern "comfort" gets to learn local customs the hard way. He is of course a writer and as such seen as a weak person by the local men into hunting and football. For me this is the best film that swedish actor Alexander Skarsgård has been in and he blends in well with the accent and macho ways although I still find his puppy face to be a bit too nice for this sort of role which he shares with his close friend Joel Kinnaman.
