BECK "The Hospital Murders"

The 4th and last film of 2015 in the popular swedish crime series this time focus on a murder of a doctor at a hospital in Stockholm. This one was a return to form after the 2nd and 3rd films in the series turned out to be somewhat of a disappointment. This is the last film in which actor Mikael Persbrandt features as the charismatic crime detective Gunvald Larsson as he will be replaced for the 4 films in 2016 after being involved in a major cocaine scandal. The ending scene with him and Martin Beck (Peter Haber) is very emotional and a silent and powerful farewell from Persbrandt.

Lily & Kat

A drama about friendship and the demise of it between an american and an english girl in the NYC fashion scene. In this one you get dropped straight into the setup and the trendy young fashion and art scene in NYC. This is a self centered journey about living through someone else and when the english girl decides to return to London to work for her dad the 4 year friendship is turned on its head. I liked the style of how it has been filmed and the music adds to creating a trendy vibe. A world of bored young people using drugs and sex to cope became somewhat fascinating although it is the same old story made over and over again during our film history.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Unhappily , this film dredged up lots of painful memories. Damn Kaufman and his presumably cheese-eating ways ( ) !

Nebraska

A simply brilliant film with amazing dialogue that made me laugh a lot. The storyline about the old man believing he's won a million dollars is not important here as this is about the secrets of our parents and their experiences in life that maybe we have no idea about. This could have been about my dad or anyone's dad and at times this comes close to the special Mike Leigh vibe which is unusual for an american film. Black and white films usually annoys me but it makes perfect sense that this one is despite it being in parts a road movie that normally requires colour. You rarely get to see a film where each actor performs as good as this and adds something in their own way.

Girlhood

This french film set in a Paris suburb ghetto is about a black girl and her social struggles. Not having good enough grades to continue her studies she gets in contact with a girl gang and start to steal and deal to be able to have a good time. This is of course a film about the enormous immigrant problems facing France and the divide between the have and the have nots. If this had been about boys then the film would have been filled with shootings and drug selling and hardcore violence but as this deals with girls that part of the criminal life is much less violent and focuses more on the mental part of that lifestyle and the issues that come with it. I liked it a lot and this is a film that made me think of a film with a similar title, namely "Kidulthood". In one scene this film shows the social profiling that black people are subjected to in stores and of course even someone like Oprah experienced that while in Paris.

Stilla Hjärta (Calm Heart)

If you miss Bergman and a setting of a family in a house where issues are drawn into open daylight then this danish drama may please you. This is about a patriarchal mother dying from cancer who has decided to end her life herself with pills but before that wants a weekend with her kids and their partners and her grandkid who all know beforehand about those plans. Legendary actress Ghita Nörby is always magnificent to watch and gives a lot of weight to this film. Danish film keeps producing the heavy and deep well made dramas and this is the latest one. The scene where they all smoke a joint together is priceless.

Headhunters...
I LOVED it.
When I started watching it, I had no idea that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau was in the film.
I had just finished watching Game of Thrones, and Nikolaj is on my LIST :horny:

This started off alright, pretty good even. After half an hour I even said, I like this film. Then something happened and it turned into a right load of bollocks. So, on balance, 5/10.

Synecdoche , New York

Watching this movie made me realise how tired I am of the whole "meta-" business in art. Ironicism is no substitute for interest and intrigue. As for the "time slips" , they're arguably as big a cliche in Kaufman films as the "twist ending" is in a M. Night Shyamalan film ...

What do you mean by "time slips"

Are you referring to nonlinear narrative?

Yeah , more or less ...

Okay. I only asked because I thought maybe you might have been referring to something else. It seemed odd to me to refer to it as cliche with CK since so many other writers and writer/directors zealously employ it as technique. If anyone I'd say maybe Christopher Nolan uses it to the point of cliche. Anyhow, you did state it was an arguable point. I guess that was my very poor argument against it.

As for the film, it's been so long since I have seen it that I can't be sure but I remember it having a much more lineal progression. The characters visibly age thru the film. In any event I remember liking it but thanks for posting since Im feeling like revisiting it now.

Dying of the Light

This is a bit different to the usual America versus islamic terrorist films. Nicholas Cage stars as a CIA agent forced into retirement who has not forgotten the islamic radical who captured and tortured him 22 years ago. With the help of NSA they get an indication of where the islamic radical is hiding which takes them to Romania and Kenya. Anton Yelchin from the amazing "Alpha Dog" has come of age and manages to partner Cage well in this one.

Young & Beautiful

Perhaps the best french film I have seen together with another very sexual film from the country, "Blue is the warmest colour". This is about a teen girl who loses her virginity just before she turns 17 and that makes her start selling her body to older men. The film is about a young girls sexual freedom and choices and doesn't judge although of course her lifestyle will land her in trouble. Marine Vacth who plays the teen girl must have been born to star in this film and is a very impressive new actress for me. It is easy to see how french film in recent years have turned the debate about sex and sexual freedom and treats it without the judgemental moral values that dictate the topic in most of the other countries in the world. A real must see for any true fan of a well made drama.

To be honest , I'm not that familiar with Christopher Nolan's films. I suppose it's also that the plaudits which Kaufman has received don't quite seem warranted. Admittedly , watching Sunshine and Synecdoche back to back may not have been that wise. They both felt so arch & cleverly abstracted but ultimately quite unengaging with such uninteresting characters. While watching the films , I didn't really care at all about what happened. It was more like watching a magician pull stuff out his hat ... I admired the skill but didn't feel invested in any of it ...

Still ,I guess I'm happy that films such as Kaufman's are still able to made in the Hollywood system , really ...

The Surrogate

Quite good for a tv movie and it is always funny to watch a woman going nuts because of love for a man turning into obsession. This one reminded me a bit of the classic "Single white female" but in this one the obsessed mad female does all she can to be the surrogate mother of the man she wants to steal from his wife.

Cut Bank

Always nice to see Billy Bob Thornton in action and after his success with "Fargo" he features in this one based in Montana. It is filled with famous actors and feels as authentic as wood which is always nice. The basic story is about an attempt to use fraud to cash in on a reward and the actor who caught my eye the most in this one was Michael Stuhlbarg as the recluse Derby Milton. John Malkovich is always worth watching but in this one he does not get to spread himself all over the film and use all the tricks in his actors book playing the sheriff.

Black Sea

Jude Law is a submarine film sounds like a real turkey award film but how wrong I was. This is by far the best submarine related film I have ever seen and when Jude does not spend his time in bars he always seem to impress you as an actor. This film is about the legendary tale of nazi gold stored in a sunken submarine and deals with mans greed and willingness to do almost anything for money. A simply amazing cast and this one keeps you nervous almost throughout so a real edge of the seat film that was a pleasant surprise.

http://www.swefilmer.com/mommy-2014/mommy-2014-video_0a03f6dda.html

Mommy

Apparently this film divides the public and I can see why as it is one of them films that you either love or hate. The director who also is himself an actor and for some famous from the film "I killed my mother", where his character Hubert was described as a Morrissey in a film, tells a story based in the french speaking part of Canada about a mother who struggles to keep her ADD son in check. The director chooses to cut the edges of the picture so it looks like a 4:3 format at times but during the characters happier moments the picture is expanded to a full 16:9 format. This is supposed to enhance the feeling of the characters minds and especially that of one suffering from ADD.

There is a lot of music in this film from Dido and Celine Dion to Oasis and although the people in it are living a very humdrum life there lies a psychological mystery over their life. Having previously seen the directors film "Tom at the Farm" I cannot say this was any better or any worse. I can see what the people loving it sees in it as well as what those hating it does not see in it. It was nice to hear some canadian french accent and the actress playing the mother reminded me of the mother of the girl in "Gilmore Girls".

Somehow poetic and wonderfully mysterious while at the same time being very humdrum but impressive that a director like Xavier Dolan can make a film like this at such a young age.
