10/10. I'm actually going to watch it again tonight.

The-Imitation-Game-poster-1.jpg

8/10. Some things could have been done better but the performances were spot on. John Clair is a real dick.

Big_Eyes_poster.jpg

10/10. A very refreshing Tim Burton film. Cinematography, story, character development, score (obviously) were all perfect. Christoph Waltz made me squirm.

8/10 because... shit's nasty. I was very surprised by this one. Going into it I thought it was about witches for some reason.

0/10. I thought Aidan Gillen would be enough to draw me into the lackluster story. Sadly, he was not.

0/10. I'm all for campy horror but this was just horrible. Zero charm whatsoever. I turned it off about 20 minutes in.

The Oranges

As soon as August comes I long for xmas and that longing got stronger from watching this one. It is a comedy with some drama about two families in New Jersey living in houses opposite of each other. The story is told by the daughter in one of the families who still has not left her parents house and dreams about a life of her own. Through her we see what happens with the two families as things unfold. Allison Janney is like made for these kinds of films as the bossy wife trying to keep a check on everyone and everything. Great acting with a lot of laughs and a pleasure to watch throughout and actually this could have been turned into a tv series cause I would have liked to see more of it.

Survivor

When films mix casts from two countries, in this case british and american, it rarely come out any good and this is no different. Pierce Brosnan has left his Bond days behind and in this one he is a lethal hitman who chases after the character played by highly overrated actress/face Milla Jovovich who has made a career out of turning up in awful films so for this she is perfect.

This comes complete with a wheelchaired women controlling all the action from her computer room and loads of half decent action. It was supposed to be a film about how intelligence has stopped 53 terror attacks in NYC since the September 11 attacks but along the way they got lost in a story with bad actors who seem like they couldn't care less. Of course the computers are like in most films and are not like the ones in the real world so you get these things moving on the screens and old tacky computer sounds which makes any kind of person dealing with computers laugh there heads off.

http://dreamfilmhd.org/movies/details/683244436-the-lifeguard/

The Lifeguard

This is probably the best indie film I have ever seen and it stars perhaps the best actress of them all currently in Kristen Bell. She has the ability to show loads of emotion with little effort as it comes naturally and without her this story may have turned out crap. This is the type of film I would like to see her do more of although by now she is probably a too big name to be given that chance again.

She stars as a woman in her 30's bored of her NYC job who goes back home to the countryside and chooses to work as a lifeguard like during her schooldays. This story is about not letting go of the past and your youth and hesitating about becoming a boring adult with all that comes with it. I guess the message is that you don't have to kill your soul to become an adult and although a lifeguard may save others she may not be able to save herself.

The feeling and mood of this film is amazingly authentic somehow and I enjoyed every second of it. Even though the ending is far from original the film itself sure is. This is the ultimate saying goodbye to summer and the lover film and as such it was perfect timing to watch it now. Lovely bunch of lost teens and 30 somethings smoking weed as their pity party focuses on what they should do with their lives and the future.

Staten Island Summer

You get to see more and more of the cast from SNL in various films these days and this is another one featuring some famous SNL faces. This is the second night in row I watch a film about lifeguards and this summer comedy made me laugh here and there. My favourite stand up comedian Jim Gaffigan plays a father in this one about some kids working as lifeguards and dreaming about girls. I liked Zack Pearlman as the chubby boy with funny comments about various things cause the dialogue is really driven and full of sarcasm and irony. If in the right mood this film will make you laugh out loud a lot.

http://dreamfilmhd.org/movies/details/683244385-flipped/

Flipped

When a film is based on a novel you always get your hopes up and this lived up to all the expectation and more. I thought they had stopped doing this sort of film and as a film this must be like picking up a really good classic and just let you admire how well it has been made cause this one really is. Rarely do you see a cast that all add something to it in their own way and I suspect the novel must be really good reading cause to me the film is just perfection.

You often see films that are about adult romance but this is about romance between kids who just turned teens or are about to. Set in early 60's Detroit suburb it tells the story about a boy and a girl and their oh so complicated friendship and romance as they live in houses opposite to each other. I love how scenes from their lives are repeated and played again from their perspective and how they viewed it and this film is a few years old but really worth watching from start to finish.

http://dreamfilmhd.org/movies/details/683244421-the-ledge/

The Ledge

Well told story dealing with religion and being stuck in a mindset that may not be that productive and may harm others around you. Loads of well known faces and great acting throughout. The end felt a bit too simple though and could have been done better.

http://dreamfilmhd.org/movies/details/683244456-april-9th/

April 9th

This new danish drama is about the germans invading Denmark and focuses on a platoon sent to defend the border to Germany. This may in some weird way be the best military film I have seen in that it shows none of the american style hero propaganda and instead deals with what little means and equipment these men had against the mighty german machine. It ends with a touching documentary interview with some of the men that this film is about and that were lucky to survive as the news of the danish government surrender took many hours to reach the soldiers which meant a lot of soldiers died unnecessarily. If you wanna see a cool action driven military film this is not it as this deals with reality which is rare for this genre.

Take Shelter

Been looking through some films I missed some years ago and this is one of them. The powerful Michael Shannon stars as a man with schizo like symptoms who builds a storm shelter in his backyard which becomes some sort of obsession. This film deals with what we are afraid of in a way that limits our lives. Superb acting throughout and a very haunting feel as you wait for something big to happen and the nightmare scenes are pretty well made.

http://dreamfilmhd.org/movies/details/683244249-the-art-of-getting-by/

The Art of Getting By

Set in NYC this comes with a fairly good soundtrack including Pavement and is about young love and the complications that come with it. It did remind me of a lot of things I went through in my life because of love. I liked the characters in it and the dialogue although perhaps some of it felt a bit cheesy. Alicia Silverstone is so old now and looks like a polish cleaner in this one. The end is just there to please the audience cause in real life I doubt it would have ended like that. I had no idea that Steven Spielberg has an acting daughter and in this one she has a small role.

One Day

So this is based on a great novel and according to people who read it the book was great and this film even better and I can see why they feel that way. This film about a young man and woman based in London deals with their complicated love affair over many years. On the date July 15th in the late 80's until just a few yers ago we get to see what has happened and goes on in their lives as they keep in touch but do various things like travelling and working and so forth.

I never felt that Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess managed to create that great chemistry needed for this to feel perfect but the story is fascinating and the years flashing by made me think of what I did that year and where I was in life then. I am a bit sceptic to films that portray London as some sort of clean and cool place to live like they tend to portray NYC or LA in films so if you've been there that part is hard to relate to as London is as dull when it comes to colours and a general feel as a sack of old potatoes. Other than that this was ok and was probably saved by the fact it is based on a novel.

http://dreamfilmhd.org/movies/details/301-sin-nombre/

Yeah, the title is well known to me but it still took me this long to watch it and what an absolutely heartless film this is with raw violence and a great story as well about people escaping from various parts of South America to find hope in USA. This is as close you can come to reality as this deals with the mexican mafia and people doing anything for a new life in another country.

This is surely one of the best films out there in many ways and the acting is so good it does not feel like acting at all and I doubt you can give actors a better compliment than that.

http://dreamfilmhd.org/movies/details/683244462-bessie/

Bessie

Queen Latifah as Bessie Smith the blues legend, or the Empress of Blues, and what a fantastic and sometimes tragic film about her life. These people were the real deal long before rappers appeared with bling and expensive taste. The film made me long for a home on a train going anywhere you like along those tracks. Even if you do not appreciate this type of music the film is worth watching and those that talk about racism now should watch this to realise what true racism used to be like back when people had real problems and did not feel violated for any little incident that they use to vandalise entire towns.

http://swefilm.tv/watch/san-andreas_t0b08/

San Andreas

Yet another catastrophy film and this makes you gasp as you see California crumble. This is a propaganda film for american values and you can't have one without a young woman with doll like eyes and massive tits. If you shut the brain off and let this drip in your eyes then the ride this film provides can be entertaining but nothing more.

http://swefilm.tv/watch/club-life_t0bct/

Club Life

I love stories about people going from rags to riches and this is a real life story about a guy going from being a limo driver to providing models for the club scene to make big spenders spend more. You get scenes where people dance all silly in clubs trying to be cool as the smart people this film is about cash in on it. I liked the film a lot despite the stereotype portrayal of mob geezers with italian backgrounds but this one at least felt more authentic than most other films about people making cash in the underworld.

http://dreamfilmhd.org/movies/details/393-being-flynn/

Being Flynn

Realising that you have not seen a film featuring Robert De Niro is like striking gold so I got very excited when I found this one. This is based on the memoirs of Nick Flynn and set in Boston and deals with an absent father and his troubled relationship with his son. The son works at the local shelter where his dad finally ends up and becomes a stage for the two to settle their differences and try to understand each other. Always a pleasure to see De Niro let his steam out and Paul Dano is impressive as his troubled son who wants to write just like his dad.

Saw this some time ago...favorite horror film in recent memory. And second Whiplash posted above...well worth it for the devil's grin at the end if nothing else.

For the Love of Money

Despite Edward Furlong and James Caan being in this one it is absolutely useless and the first ever film based on real events that for me was not good viewing at all. I think they focused too much on these guys jewish heritage and turned it into a soft action film that just feels silly. Even the voice telling the story along the way drove me nuts and what should have been a great story of some guys from Israel making it big in America ended up becoming such a disappointment in every way.

http://dreamfilmhd.org/movies/details/26-hard-boiled-sweets/

Hard Boiled Sweets

This starts off badly but grows along the way. A typical english gangster drama set in a seaside town where every gangster character is named after a hard boiled sweet depending on his character. This is a trust no one type of film where greed and the easy life will make people do anything. For me Paul Freeman stands out in this one as the old school gangster and Peter Wight has always been a favourite actor of mine as I've never seen him appear in a bad film and in this one he does his job well as usual. This film teaches a lesson for any gangster out there which is sort of a theme.

http://dreamfilmhd.org/movies/details/683244269-perfect-sense/

Perfect Sense

Thought I had seen all films with Ewan McGregor but apparently not as I had missed this one. Quite a weird theme with people who lose their taste and other senses all over world as we get to follow these people in Scotland and how that changes their lives. Ewan plays this chef that have been this ladies man all his life who finally falls for a woman who also happens to be a epidemiologic who studies the new cases.

The film is fairly dark but also somehow beautiful and reminds us all of what matters when disaster strikes. I liked the narrative voice that here and there tells you things along the way and this was a nice surprise of a film but when Ewan is in one it rarely disappoints. The chemistry between him and actress Emma Green in this one is really hot.

barton fink, my fav cohen bros film and i think technically there best (lol the box always makes me think of the movie seven and the lemon heads song here comes gweneths head in a box). better than millers crossing if anyone wants to debate the issue. also watched harlem nights which is kinda funny as it seems to be the blaxsploitation of the movie johnny dangerously but way way funnier than that movie was

http://swefilm.tv/watch/woman-in-gold_t0bdo/

Woman in Gold

Helen Mirren is always worth watching and in her case her acting may have the same style in every film she is in but in her case that is a good thing. In this film she plays this LA based jewish woman who fled the nazis in Austria who wants the portrait of her sister back that the nazis stole from her family. This is of course based on real life and the complicated legal matter that a lawyer based in LA took upon himself in order to help her since he also had family ties to Austria.

I had never heard of the paintings by Gustav Klimt and this is one of few films about the nazis that does not focus on the grim ordeals but instead paints a very honest portrayal of the events. Katie Holmes plays the wife of the lawyer in this one and if you ignore the early parts of the film where the characters finish each others lines then you should love this well told story cause I sure did.

http://swefilm.tv/watch/vendetta-2015_if69t/

Vendetta

For a B-movie this is interesting only due to the fact that it is set inside a prison. A cop kills some criminals in order to deal directly with the people that was behind the murder of his wife. This is very brutal and bloody and only made me long for more of those prison documentaries you get on various tv channels. The big guy in this one may be the biggest I have ever seen in a film.

http://swefilm.tv/watch/poltergeist_ifwf7/

Poltergeist

Yes, this is the remake of the classic film and one of many where an american core family is threatened by something and in this case occult powers which is very symbolic in many ways. What I noticed was that the family has a father out of work who still spends too much to please the kids and wife by just using another credit card and buying another house seems to be very easy. Maybe this should be seen as a stock market crash horror instead of one about the well known old film about a girl and her family being attacked by a poltergeist or whatever.

With modern technology they have been able to do more impressive things but for the most part this remake sticks to the old story a lot with minor changes here and there. The little girl is as cute as in the first one and has the same voice. Interesting to see a remake of this one cause the old classic left a big impression when it premiered.

http://swefilm.tv/watch/danny-collins_if7i7/

Danny Collins

Al Pacino as the crooner Danny Collins who lives off his old hits from when he was young on tour performing for his golden girl fans. I just love Al Pacino and in this one he is better than ever and the banter between him and the Hilton hotel manager played by Annette Bening is just fantastic. This is a feel good film but not without a crack here and there in the perfect facade. The old singer gets told by his manager that John Lennon and Yoko Ono wrote him a letter that never reached him when he was a newcomer and that letter makes him realise he needs to change his life which includes the son he neglected. This was a very nice surprise and it is totally down to the tremendous cast.

http://swefilm.tv/film/unfinished-business_iebii/

Unfinished Business

This is Euro Trip for adults about failed american businessmen starting a new company and travelling to Berlin to seal a deal. You get a film full of american stereotypes about europeans and it is absolutely silly and it works here and there. Vince Vaughn has really become the go to guy for this type of role but I sometimes find myself thinking he lacks a lot for this genre compared to a lot of others actors in these sort of films over the years.

heaven knows what is the most accurate depiction of heroin addiction ive ever seen on screen and heres why. its an amzing accomplishment to providing an understanding of what its like to use and know addicts for those that simply dont have the experience. these guys are now on my radar for sure

"By the time we reach the gut-wrenching opening credits for Heaven Knows What, the New York filmmaking brothers Benny and Josh Safdie’s newest, it’s clear we’re in for an intensely realistic, stomach-churning, depressing movie.

If you can even call it a movie. Heaven Knows What blurs the line between fiction and reality, chronicling the all-too-true story of homeless heroin addict Arielle Holmes. The Safdie brothers discovered Arielle and her story, plucking her off the streets to commit her visceral love for Ilya and heroin to the big screen. Arielle herself stars in the film, as Harley, alongside other amateur actors. Which is to say: other addicts living on the street. As Ilya, Caleb Landry Jones (of X-Men: The First Class) is the only trained actor on set, and he’s nearly unrecognizable as Ilya, Harley’s lover and tormentor. He’s incredibly terrifying, reaching the darkest of depths to become the manipulative and chillingly corrupted by drugs overlord of the young, drugged and homeless.

The proceedings are emblematic of a mind-boggling commitment to realism, but it’s uncomfortably close to exploitation. Arielle was not clean or sober while making this film. Benny and Josh were paying her to write her story and to channel it on camera, in a way that almost feels like enabling. Thankfully, she’s now escaped the sick cycle: Arielle’s clean, and it seems that’s thanks to this movie. She referred to the movie as “willing exploitation.”

In many ways, the story behind the scenes is probably better than the actual movie (a making-of documentary feels mandatory), but they’re also inextricable, one and the same, on the same murky continuum. As Josh Safdie warned us before our screening, “this is not a movie.”

Buddy Duress, who plays the affable and friend zone’d drug dealer Mike, is hilarious and the equivalent of street-Shakespeare. He was arrested 12 hours after they wrapped shooting. Now he’s out of prison and in acting classes.

Ilya himself was on set, and overdosed in a McDonald’s bathroom…right in front of Jones, who was about to shoot a scene of Ilya OD’ing in a McDonald’s bathroom. Yup. This past April, Ilya was lost to another overdose, a specter over the movie much like his character is onscreen.

Heaven Knows What is about the traps of youth, the inescapable grasp that drugs and love can have on a person. Ilya is awful, his humanity long lost, sacrificed to the altar of heroin, but Harley can’t quit him any more than she can quit shoving needles into her arms.

On a purely cinematic sense, Heaven Knows What is superlative, a brilliantly and beautifully shot film, blessed with a transformative Claude Debussy score arranged by Isao Tomita. With a wide zoom lens, the Safdie’s emphasize the distance between the audience and its subjects, and the distance between its characters. Moments of intimacy and friendship are mirage; other people are mere objects, obstacles to the next high.

The audience is another obstacle, one that I’m not sure the Safdie brothers manage to climb, if they even wanted to. As Josh said, “this is not a movie.” But it hardly matters; it’s all worth it if Arielle, Buddy or anyone else manage to escape because of this. Most moviegoers will want to escape along with them.

Heaven Knows What arrives in Los Angeles and New York on May 29, with a national release following."

its as uncomfotable as being around real addicts

The Idealist

Back in the days of the cold war the americans crashed a B-52 in Thule on Greenland and 20 years after that event a danish journalist started to investigate what happened to the danish crew that had the unfortunate task of cleaning up the area from amongst other things plutonium.

This is very well made and I loved how they managed to copy the look and feel of the late 80's and early 90's and the old films of the events give this a very documentary feel. It is a story done before about governments hiding the truth and how it affects the average citizen who ends up getting all kinds of medical problems.

The danish show that they can handle this genre as well and deep down this deals with how governments ignore things for the greater good of the people they are supposed to protect. Poul Brink was awarded the finest journalist prize for his work on this in 1997 and died just five years later from a heart attack leaving his spanish wife and their son behind.
