I Melt With You

Four men go on holiday for their annual reunion and things spiral out of control. This film comes with a long sountrack of great indie tunes and a lot of punk rock which really manages to increase the intensity of the film. I have rarely seen four actors create such magic in front of a camera before and it is like they were all meant for the characters they play. A really pleasant surprise that manages to excite you and surprise you along the way.

In Secret

What surprised me most about this film was the mixed cast. Elizabeth Olsen, Jessica Lange, Matt Lucas and MacKenzie Crook amongst others. This film grows on you along the way after a rather shaky start. Forbidden love in France in 1860's Paris where obsession and lust leads to crime.

WTF, hard to give a rating. I still can't work out whether to give this a recommendation or an avoid, I just don't know.

Begin Again

Films about music are usually quite terrible and if they are feel good films as well then it normally does not work but this is a refreshing change in that sense. Films featuring Keira Knightley never seem do disappoint me and she seems to be able to choose the best types of films for her. Even the music in this film is pretty good for a change.

Certainly the best film about music that I have ever seen and the love story in it keeps you interested throughout so yet another great film on what turned out to be a great film weekend for me.

Jessabelle

Horror films rarely impress you if you are above the age of 20 and this was sadly no different. It is as if the director lost interest in the plot and just cut it off short at the end. Sad to see that the demise of this genre has been so dramatic. Horrible ending to an otherwise great weekend of watching films.

like Martin Scorsese I think its pretty good so I give it an A :thumb:
also, I am guessing that had I been allowed to see this sort of film when I was 10, it would have been quite memorable to me even now :brows:
instead I am more of Phoebe Cates :horny: in Fast Times at Ridgemont High kind of guy, as regards to my early "movie memories" of nudity that still linger and I guess always shall:blushing:

This week I've seen two great movies, one old, one new.

boyhood-1b.jpg

The story of a boy growing up. Boring film fact, this was filmed over 12 years with the same actors. That aside much of it is fantastic, it only falls down slightly towards the end. 9/10.

The+Hustler+72.jpg

This was pretty much flawless. Don't know why I've never seen it before, 10/10.

Deliver Us From Evil

This should have been entitled "Deliver us from this film" cause that is how bad it is. Most of the scenes so dark you need a pair of night vision goggles to appreciate it. Supposedly based on real events but if you mix mental illness with drugs you will get possessed. They tried to mix criminal drama with horror here and it turned out like a parody on itself. Two great actors in this one really let themselves down by taking part in something like this in wait for something better.

Theory_of_Everything.jpg

Excellent film. Acting is flawless all around. Eddie Redmayne will win best Actor at the 2015 Academy Awards, I'm most certain. Beautiful musical score.

Four out of four stars.

Welcome To New York

About the Dominique Strauss-Kahn scandal where Gerard Depardieu makes a brilliant portrayal of the mans darker side of sex and decadence. The opening scenes are like a porn film and goes on for so long that you start to wonder what type of film this is but when that is over the film becomes really fascinating. I like the way the film portrays this without any judgement in a way to try to understad what drives someone to behave in that way.

Jeff, Who Lives At Home

Anything wih Susan Sarandon is usually worth a watch and this was no different. It deals with how things that happen seem to be some sort of universal plan and I guess the saying "everything has a meaning" sums this film up. There are references to the Mel Gibson film "Signs" and it does make you think about all the weird happenings and encounters with people that you had in your life that with time seem to make sense.

Burning

This norwegian film might interest any gumball fanatics out there as it is about a few norwegians and some swedes racing from Oslo to the North Cape. Basically a comedy but very well made and the mother of all road movies. If the storyline will not interest you then you can enjoy the magic scenery of Norway.

Two Men In Town

Forest Whitaker single handedly saves this film with his powerful acting. The film is located on the border between USA and Mexico and is about the relationship between a convict and a parole officer. It follows the convicts attempt to adapt to a new life outside of prison, where he converted to islam, and the local sheriff trying to obstruct it the best he can. This french production is slow paced but keeps you interested along the way.

the book was fantastic and takes place right around the corner from where i grew up. love it.

so it was a slow night with no sleep so i watched a bunch of films.

-buck and the preacher

-angel and the badman

-trainspotting

-seven guns for the macgregors

-the tall men

the heathers (i love all the replacement references. color me impressed, westerberg high etc. almost as bad as the gilmore girls going to chilton academy)

Miss Meadows

Maybe the first real acting challenge for Katie Holmes where she really had to stretch her acting ability. In this she plays a twisted elementary teacher who dresses like Mary Poppins and wear tap shoes all day. She bumps into the local sheriff who begins to realise there is something weird about his new found love.

Very easy viewing and quite fun here and there but at the same time the people behind it must have been a bit undecided when it comes to what sort of film this was supposed to be. Quite a few genres could be slapped onto this one.

Toodle-oo

Frontera

Ed Harris in another heavy type of film this time about the border issue between USA and Mexico. Nice to see Eva Longoria in her first serious role and without the usual layers of make up there is a real natural beauty. Beautifully shot and if you are into dry dusty scenery then I guess you like that part too. Quite a clever criminal storyline along the way and this film chose another path than you usually see in this genre.

The Longest Week

This caught my attention for the simple reason that people who had seen it seemed to absolutely hate it and I think I know why. Whenever people are challenged by something intellectual and witty when it comes to film then it seems that these illiterate people just cannot handle it. If they do not understand the words used in the film they get mad and if the film happens to spit out some truths then it is simply too much for the insecure masses out there. The same people that criticise this film will most likely claim that Morrissey and his songs are depressive and sad and they are not able to see the wit and humour in them.

This is an absolutely amazing film about a man that have the means to never grow up. He lives a carefree life until love challenges his senses and makes him hoover above his own life to analyse it and he does not like what he sees although he is able to live with it. This man is as slippery as a bar of soap but is probably on another level intellectually than most other people. I see this film as very liberating in that you can go your own way and you can wait with growing up until you choose to yourself. It made me think of the words of footballer and actor Eric Cantona and how he stated the importance of being in touch with the child within.

The film is a pleasure on the eye and the voice over gives you that feeling of reading a book while at the same time you watch a film. I will not hide the fact that I view the main male character as somewhat of a newfound hero of mine as I immediately felt we have something in common. The literature references should please even the most hardened intellectual out there but the no brainer crowd out there who cannot read or write or understand classic words and meanings will feel as stupid as they already knew deep down that they are.

The world needs more films like this one!

Cheap Thrills (2013)

A wealthy couple meet a couple of guys in a bar and over the course of the evening offer them increasing amounts of money to participate in a series of bizarre dares.

I really got drawn into this. What starts off almost as a black comedy ends up being a pretty interesting commentary on the depths we can sink to in pursuit of filthy lucre.

7/10

Calvary

Certainly not Father Ted and one of few irish films not touching on the subject of the IRA. Brendan Gleeson is great as usual in this one where he plays a small-town priest who gets a death threat during one of the Sunday confessionals. I guess the topic of the film is the ongoing loss of faith among people and how that changes a society or in this case a village.

Nice little mention of "Brideshead Revisited" and some of the actors perhaps do their irish accents a little bit over the top which at times turns it into a farce but it made me laugh along the way.

Juno

Yes, I have known about it since the release but some films tend to stay off radar anyway and you keep them like a fine wine waiting for the perfect film night to watch them and tonight I did. Loved the dialogue in it which is fast and witty and references to rock bands and artists also lifts the film. No need to say more as you've all seen it already.
