Pasolini's Mamma Roma and Oedipus Rex.
Just seen "The company men" which is perhaps the most honest american film ever. Totally without the hoo haa and the bla bla and the bling bling and crap that americans try and fool people abroad that is some kind of standard. The film really shows what happens to people losing their job and having to take part in meaningless projects to try and get a new one.
Loved the irony and sarcasm in it and recognise that from personal experiences in my earlier life when I was out of a job during certain times. The end though is typical american leaving a bit of hope and a glimpse of revenge and success. But in the words of Suze Orman, "the american spirit is broken". This was the first film that truly demonstrate that at least some within the film production realise that these are indeed new times even for america.

I should have brought more DVDs with me, all that made it with me is a small case with:
The Chrstopher Eccelston season of "Doctor Who"
The Middle Earth Trilogy
"Requiem for a Dream"
"Blade Runner" director's cut one side and theatrical release on the other
the 10th anniversary performance of "Les Miz"
A dvd entitled "AM" with 4 films on it:
State Fair, Bye Bye Birdie, Viva Las Vegas & The Cincinnati Kid
Ann-Margret is on all 4 of these films
and last but not least, 2 DVDs one called "AH" and the other "AH2" these hold 8 films:
Roman Holidy, Sabrina, Funny Face, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Charade, Paris When It Sizzles, My Fair Lady & "How to Steal a Million"
-so far I have watched everything but the "AM" and most of the "AH1&2" but last night I watched
and it was like falling in love with Audrey Hepburn all over again, also, I had forgotten how brilliant Bogart is in it!
ps: tonight I think another AH film is on the menu after I catch up on "House" perhaps "Charade"
Valar Dohaeris
Watched it twice in one week. I was overall quite impressed with the 3D, they did a pretty good job! I'm a fan of the prequels as well as the originals, so it brought a smile on my face to watch something that I watched in the cinemas probably around the age of 6! Since I've bought two massive phantom menace posters that are on my wall and greatly fantising over Padmé and buying old star wars games for my gamecube/wii!!
a bit overated if I may say so....the critics are tossing themselves over this film and I can't see why to be honest!
Basically three guys with jedi superpowers, one turns bad and it goes on from there...
Filmed using a crappy hand held camera, AGH I HATE THOSE FILMS! STOP MAKING THEM!
It was ok I guess, but I won't be watching it again...
It's crap....the boy is unlikeable...the plot is unlikeable...I switched it off after 30 mins of the film. what a waste of my life!!
Sanctum....OK, I guess. Most of the characters you wanted to die throughout most of film. There were some very awkward bits of the film when watching and the plot does go a bit silly, the last death is just bloody stupid and a waste of one of the main characters. It was adventurous in places though and I was happy to watch a film which is a bit unique and different!
done watching the AHs, now its on to:

Valar Dohaeris
...FINALLY got around to watching "There will be Blood"....
I was a bit put out to find that the first 8-9 minutes or so were filmed in total silence...until i discovered the hi-Fi lead had come loose at the back of the TV. (Rather fitting actually, as one of the characters becomes deaf during the film....).
I Loved the screaming exorcist Preacher ( CBA to find the box for actors name...sorry), and Daniel day -serious was brilliant as always....the ending utterly floored me though....what a strange way to end a movie.... If anyone likes Oil-well-dynasty history stories, with a dash of religious fervour added into the mix, I'd recommend it, but, maybe after looking forward to seeing it for so long, i could i suppose , only be a bit disappointed...just expected a bit "More"....7/10.

Once Upon A Time In Anatolia (dir. Nuri Bilge Ceylan 2011)
I missed Ceylan's 5th film Three Monkeys, but watched all of his other work (including short films).
His 6th film won Grand Prix in 2011 Cannes, which is undoubtedly his masterpiece. I'm very fortunate to witness his progress from the begining.
It's a story about policemen travel to search a body in Anatolia Steps. It may sound boring, however, it isn't.
Ceylan's previous work is often personal and intimate. In this film he achieved to reach wider audience and new frontier.
So far this is the best film I saw in 2012.
If you'd like to watch a brilliant film, don't miss Once Upon A Time In Anatolia.

ONE UPON A TIME IN ANATOLIA, yes, great film.
THREE MONKEYS is good, not his best work. Anatolia is his masterpiece although I'm partial to CLIMATES, myself.
I stumbled across this thread, didn't know it existed...in any event, the film to watch is THE TURIN HORSE - its Tarr's last film and what a way to go out!

I reserve my hatred for the Kevin Smiths of the world: people who have magically ascended to relevance despite a total lack of imagination and a failure to achieve minimal competence at any of the dozens of things that make up filmmaking.
Guys, I admire you for wanting to watch the Turin Horse. Tarr is my fellow countryman and yet I wouldn't endeavour to watch it.
And I heard so many things I failed to understand at all
