hi, i was just wondering if anyone knew this song and the meaning behind it. Been considering a morrissey tattoo lately and have an idea of a ship with said song name. My other idea is to have two hands interlocking with 'hold on to your friends'. Ive been thinking about these ideas for a while now but am interested to know peoples opinions and thoughts on them. rob

doesnt he say it all rather candidly in the song?

Its about not being able to love or be loved...the quintesential Moz song-

I mean its certainly not about sailing or seamanship or something else thats darkly symbolic :>)

well, i think the tattoo with the ship and songtitle sounds nice. and if you somehow feel connected with the lyrics in it or of some other reason especially likes this song - then its a good idea. but its really a sad song you have chosen to put on your body..

what the song is about i think is quite clear in the lyrics.. and if you dont get it - you should probably not tattoo it anywhere on you!

me and a mate started a band in 96 called seaside but still docked....

we drove miles and miles and argued about lyrics and what have you

we played our own songs and were told to leave....got thrown out......

we played Smiths/Morrissey songs...and got thrown out.....

they wanted Abba.....

but they were always wrong

and when I got thrown out of his concert in Oslo, for no other reason than singing still ill....I knew he was right again...

I lost in front of my home town.....but its good to stand alone.....

my comfort is Morrissey.....and I did nothing wrong bur sing along....

but they didn't like it

seaside...but still docked

If you're the same guy who was singing along in the recent audience recording of a concert in Texas, then it's no wonder they threw you out!

'Seasick yet still docked' - Feeling Defeated Before You Even Begin

According to a foot note in Songs That Saved Your Life, the words are borrowed (some of them) from a Joni Mitchell song called The Silky Veils Of Ardor off 1977 album Don Juan's Reckless Daughter. The same album has some lines borrowed for Shoplifters. So make sure you get a Moz tattoo, not a Joni Mitchell tattoo!

Ha ha ha, yes, he had the most abominable drone I think I've ever heard. He ruined that bootleg. It sounded like Professor Frink from "The Simpsons" was singing.

hold on to your friends

thanks for the comments guys, whats your opinion on 'hold on to your friends'?

Ive always presumed it to be about feeling rough or world-weary despite (in his opinion) not actually being anywhere in life, not having actually lived life.
