I preferred the Eddie Cochran version myself, although I was rather enamoured with the Sid Vicious cover in my youth.

did an obese hairmonster just fart? Ok, fair enough - make sure you brush them before you go back to bed for your afternoon wank though.

Well, here is an attempt anyway. These aren't in any order. I'm slightly young and know very little music pre-Velvets except for the really obvious ones (sorry).

    Metal Guru by T Rex
Sister Ray by The Velvet Underground
William, It Was Really Nothing by The Smiths
Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues by Bob Dylan
    Harborcoat by R.E.M.
    The Escape Artist by Ludus
Sister, I'm a Poet by Morrissey
Sheena is a Punk Rocker by The Ramones
The Gift by The Velvet Underground
    Begging by The Libertines

    -
OK, my list is hurting from its lack of many bands/artists, most of all Radiohead, if I had 11 I would put Life in a Glasshouse on next. It was awfully tough deciding who to sacrifice to make it 10 -> Radiohead, Ludus, Ramones, Dylan? But of those 4 songs, I do listen to the Radiohead track least...

On which note, you meant favorite tracks, right brokenddd? I picked those exactly most fitted to my personal tastes, written 'just for me'. Obviously, I think they're all Great Songs; still, if I had to do more of a simple 'best' list rather than a 'favorite' list, I would think less about the way the song speaks to me personally, is particularly [even weirdly] suited to me, does that make sense? A 'best' list would be more or less the same artists with slightly different tracks...

Anyway, my list is missing Radiohead [Life in a Glasshouse + others], Elvis Presely [(You're the) Devil in Disguise], Sparks [Angst in My Pants], The Rolling Stones [Mother's Little Helper], Sandie Shaw [Girl Don't Come], Belle + Sebastian [Me and the Major + probably others], David Bowie [Rebel Rebel + others], New Order [Temptation], Patti Smith [Dancing Barefoot], Violent Femmes [Kiss Off]... well this list could really go on and on...

The Smiths "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" - I don't think this one needs explaining.

Morrissey "I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday" - ANYONE who says Morrissey's solo career can never be better than most Smiths songs is an absolute idiot.

Rufus Wanwright "Go Or Go Ahead" - Rufus doing what he does best - grandiose, awe inspiring, beautiful.

New Order "Blue Monday" - A true epic. No remix can ever add to what was already perfect.

Suede "The Still Life" - I need to get a thesaurus 'cause this too is absolutely beautiful. I only listen to it in the right mood.

Roxy Music "Re-Make/Re-Model" - I actually prefer For Your Pleasure as an album and have better memories of it, but this song is just quintessential Roxy.

Pulp "Dishes" - "I am not Jesus though I have the same initials" is quite possibly the most incredibly genius line ever. The climax of this song is magnificent. Jarvis does kithen sink (get it!) just as good as Moz.

Edith Piaf "Adieu Mon Couer" - Really stunning little known song. I have to share it http://s64.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=32SKSC3VHMNUZ3MFG0ZLG3U4RF

Talking Heads "Once In A Lifetime" - Byrne is undoubtedly a master lyricist. Those who deride him as simply quirky, sit up and take note of this and just about every other song he's ever written. It doesn't have the immediacy of other Heads songs, but is one of the most genius for sure.

Longpigs "New York" - One of the last Longpigs songs I ever heard. Crispin displays his prowess at crafting a supremely intelligent, catchy song.
