    Default Morrissey & Leonard Cohen

    Hello,
I thought That I post a message about two of the greatest lyricists of all
time. Both of these men have an extraordinary way with the written word. Both have very distinctive voices. The only difference is Morrissey's voice has, in my view, stayed the same whereas Leonard's voice has gotten lower(Years of Smoking). I Would Like To Get Both of these men in a room together and just listen to what they have to say.

Morrisseys voice has changed quite a lot.

Listen to early Smiths, listen to Strangeways. In a short timescale his voice gained versatility (through coaching). Only remarkable because he is probably more famouse for the earlier un-trained voice era.

I am a huge fan of both of these men.

They are indeed two of the all-time great lyricists - my two favorite, as a matter of fact.

However, Cohen has written a lot of fiction (Beautiful Losers and The Favorite Game are gorgeous novels) and poetry. I would be thrilled of Moz ever published written poetry or prose. In my opinion, his lyrics can be just as potent if read, much like Cohen's. Conversely, Moz is a far superior vocalist.

By the way, in St Morrissey by Marc Simpson, he mentioned that Moz incorporated lines from a number of artists and poets, and Cohen was listed. Anyone know which lines Moz took from Cohen?

    THAT'S RIGHT!

Wasn't Cohen's line "Everything depends upon how near you sleep to me" though?

Just want to say that I find Leonard Cohen very depressing, whereas Morrissey is often tongue in cheek and quite inspirational. Cohen, on the other hand, well
to me anyway, is a real bummer.

Meh, I think they can both be depressing. I won't even listen Morrissey's outright depressing songs, nor Cohen's, but Cohen has some uplifting ones as well, in his own way. "Hallelujah," for instance, is, in my opinion, about carrying your cross, and living your life in the face of emotional adversity. It doesn't seem that uplifting, but it's really all about the value of human existence.

That's just one song off the top of my head.
