This Jesse Tobias Clown is completely UN-Impressive. Hopefully he won't be sticking around for long. He's a Bland, Boring and Unimaginative second rate songwriter. The guy is a mistake. He wasn't even any good on tour when all he had to do was be a hired hand. This Ass-Clown gets to be main co-songwriter?? It's a joke. He needs to go back to Oblivion, where he Belongs. (but of course this means he'll Never go away and we'll be stuck with his musical Dreck).

Jesse Tobias is far & away the least talented guitarist Moz has ever worked with.
    Fact.
I bet the new record is full of piano & other instruments to cover his lack of skills.

    > Fact.

    That's a very interesting fact.

I've only heard the 3 MP3s which feature him so I'm not really in a position to judge. To help me, maybe you could list all the guitarists Morrissey has worked with - from Billy Duffy to Jesse Tobias, not forgetting Neil Taylor and Kevin Armstrong and Mark E Nevin et al - and put them in the factual order of their talent.

That would be very impressive and informative for us all.

    Cheers.

    Here we go then.

    1) Johnny Marr
    2) Vini Reily
    3) Alain Whyte
    4) Boz Boorer
    5) Mark E Nevin
    6) Jesse Tobias

Ok you got me. I don't know shit. But he's the least talented that I've heard.

Ah, I was looking forward to your verdict on all the guitarists Moz has worked with. I was particularly wondering how you might rank Craig Gannon against Jesse. Presumably you are honing your nib as I type and will post your factual analysis of their talent.

at least craig was very handsome and helped write "panic".

jesse is just mozzer's boy toy but for most of us, he's not that physically interesting. basically he's a dime a dozen in east l.a., and below average when we're talking physiques.

hell, he was kicked out of the red hot chili peppers before he even did anything with them, probably the worst of their many guitarists. flea and anthony had to beg druggie (at the time) dave navarro to take over, jessie didn't last a week.

well if morrissey had to choose between jessie and jeb, i can see why he's keeping him, though it's only because of memories of jake!

His live versions of Shoplifters and Rubber Ring were noticably better than Alain Whyte's.

The name on the marquee is Morrissey.

No one who wrote songs on any solo record who is not named Morrissey will ever be nationally (in any major country) or internationally known.

If you want better songs, Morrissey is going to need to hook up with guitar players that don't have anything good going on. Johnny Marr and Bernard Butler come to mind as the type of guys Moz needs to work with. I have no hope for that ever happening, so I'm resigned to getting good songs that are better than almost anything out there but nothing that will ever be in the rock and roll hall of fame.

I see Tobias as an addition rather than part of the normal ensemble (Boz/Whyte). He can't hurt it only benefit it.
Moz should change the WHOLE band and make a new sound altogether.

My original point wasn't so much about his guitar playing (although it's rather "generic" in nature for sure) but more about the music he has written for the new Moz cd. I Know it has only been three songs heard so far but I cannot help but feel extremely disappointed by what I have heard. I thought "Killed Me" was the best of a Very weak lot. To me, there really is no doubt that other guys could have come up with Much Better music for the lyrics Morrissey has written. I do Not believe (yes, after only hearing three songs...it's Enough) that Jesse Tobias is up to the job at all. Here's hoping tgat the Tobias era will quickly come to an end.

Well, he didn't help write Panic, but claimed he should have had a co-write for Ask.

Happily I know nothing about the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

You know, I just can't see how this relates to his guitar-playing abilities.

In the interests of equal time, he also overplayed First of the Gang to Die and did a WRETCHED job of the solo for Don't Make Fun Of Daddy's Voice in the studio. Plus, he also can't sing background vocals--and Mikey and Boz together can't compensate for Alain on that front.

    Cheers,

    Jamie

You know, I'd completely forgotten about Craig Gannon. I'm not too sure about him cos it's hard to decifer his bits from Marr's. And I couldn't really tell when I saw him with Vini Peculiar cos you could hardly hear him.
With that it mind, maybe on the new Moz stuff I've heard, it's one of the other guitarists that sounds sucky.
Though it was interesting that on the Quarry b sides that Jesse played on, piano & (on The Public Image) harp were more to the fore.
And again, that said, more variety of instruments is no bad thing.

PS I appreciate being able to have a proper discussion instead of a slanging match. So cheers.

I don't agree with ditching the band for another guitar based songwriter. I tend to see Whyte/Boorer/Day & Moz as a band called 'Morrissey' as opposed to one guy & backing musicians.
If he was to ditch his band, I'd like to nominate Ben Folds or someone like that.
