Morrissey: Pop Star Or Rock Star?

I find it really difficult when describing Morrissey's music to strangers. When I say "Popstar" it sounds too teeny-bop but when I say "Rockstar" I think Limp Biscuit. I don't like to say "Alternative" because that seem like a cop-out and when I say "Indie" no-one seems to know what this means. Maybe I will just say it's "Classical with lyrics" and have done with it!!!!

I am always recommending Morrissey to strangers and I want to do the best by him I'm just not sure with genre he's in!

I KNOW.....

Next time I'm going to say "Fifties/Rockabilly"!!!!!

Morrissey is absolutely and without doubt a pop star.

He is a pop star in the oldest and purest sense of the word.

If the people you are describing him to get the wrong impression from this terminolgy then its the people you are discussing music with and the description that needs to change.

people who haven't heard of morrissey?

who are these bizarre people, and where do you live? i don't know anyone who hasn't heard of morrissey...even MY MOTHER has seen the old queen in concert, which is just too weird...

and drop all the ridiculous musical genre stuff, just let these sad souls hear it...

Re: people who haven't heard of morrissey?

Somebody new started at work the other day and my workmates are always quick to inform people of how i'm mad about Morrissey. The new person said "didn't he used to sing in The Doors".

People Not Familiar With Morrissey.

You must live in Mexico my dear. I live in London and not a cool part of it which explains it.

On record he is a PopStar, but live he is a RockStar.
I've never heard of this Limp Biscuit.
No-one knows what Indie means because it has lost it's meaning. It used to mean jangly guitars. Classical with lyrics? Pavarotti is me?

wasn;t indie more of a movement, like punk?

How about a bel-canto tenor? It's a not unreasonable description, and the bel-canto bit is rarely used nowadays. Quaint old terminology fits well with uncle Moz.
