It astounds me that despite all the records Morrissey has made in the 80's, 90's and 00's, you can't catch a decent discussion about him on the internet.

Just about every other band, from the tiniest indies to the biggest household-names, has a messageboard filled with intelligent discussion and deep musical analysis.

The level of immaturity and ignorance around here is truly shocking. You've either got racists spouting off their blind views or whiny Republicans wetting themselves over comments that a popstar made. Or maybe on a good day you'll just have people waving their flags and having tantrums over which of their countries is 'better'.

Obviously this doesn't apply to those who DO make an effort to stir up positive conversation and sentiments regarding the music, people like UncleSkinny and WhyteGrrrl.

I think the problem is that people can post anonymous on here. It doesn't encourage debate, just trolls, and then posters who would normally be sensible are wound up and end up posting rubbish back.

It was a shame that the official board was so badly run and kept crashing all the time as that could have been an alternative.

However I posted a similar message about 6 months ago and people like Uncleskinny, Dazzak and Whytegrrl told me to stick with it - you get a few gems and dare I say that my knowledge of Moz's whereabouts, what he's wearing today and people's thoughts on his music has been upgraded!

It astounds me that someone who just last week posted a thread titled "Just checked in to see how Irene was handling the news about Sharon" - http://www.morrissey-solo.com/discuss/index.cgi?noframes;read=294841 - is this week pretending he's stopping by for "intelligent discussion" and "deep musical analysis."

There are two message boards on this site. The main boards are the comments beneath the news items. This board is more anarchic, halfway between a chat room and a message board. If you don't like what you see, who cares - it scrolls away into the abyss.

UncleSkinny posted a message recently when Margaret Thatcher was taken to the hospital, stating he hopes she suffers and dies. Is that different from Irene's posts about Sharon? I would never say he can't post such a thing, but it's always interesting that inflammatory material is "okay" so long as it is far left wing. It's also noteworthy that no one posted any disrespectful or inhuman things when left wingers were mourning MP Tony Bank here. We are better than they are and have a sense of decency.

Anyway, concerning someone starting a thread about comments made by a pop star, the pop star was Morrissey and this is a site about Morrissey. People said I was being a "troll" starting a thread about Morrissey supporting animal terrorism. Yet a few days later that same subject made the newspapers of the world, such as the Australian, whose headline was "Pop star backs animal terrorists." http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5744,17833858%255E2703,00.html

People could very well have had intelligent discussions about that topic and many related sub-topics, or they could've just let my post be and click on topics they're interested in. Instead, they chose to troll me, and after the topic had fallen way down the list, they chose to troll it again to bring it back to the top. That was fun to me - whether it goes the "intelligent discussion" route or the trolling me route, I win either way...but the choice was theirs. And now you see it scrolls down down down again...clearing the path for your deep musical analysis to be front and center. However, the Theo van Gogh Martyrs Brigade will be back, and if any of the terrorism supporters wanna knife me like they knifed Theo, give it your best shot.

Yes, it's quite a sad state of affairs and often intelligent conversations
go quite unnoticed. Frankly, I believe a lot of people come in here
to be a big bitch and get it off their chests. What that has to do with
being a Morrissey fan though, is beyond me. That's why I haven't been in here
much lately.

The only problem here is that there is no real moderator, full time.
Other than that, there's tons of good people on the board.

I don't think that's the only problem.

I post on a few boards, a Radiohead one in particular, where there is seemingly endless discussion of lyrics, music, concerts, etc.
The people there are actually interested in talking about the art and learning from one another.

And that board is very lightly moderated.
