Default 4 A.M. Northside, Clapham Common / Oh, God, what was she doing there?

Well, what WAS she doing there? What could see have seen of such traumatic incident?

And, curiously, why the humoured dismissal of this woman's pained narrative, her communicative effort in the face of her own physiological silence... while the True Comedy of Daddy, whose communicative effort is NOTHING BUT the words choked in his own throat, incites the Mozzer's compassion?

    Go to bed, Codreanu.

Okay, so I was being flippant here, but does anyone have any thoughts on this song? There has been speculation that this concerns a UFO sighting (standing on the table... pointing to the frisbee... sight of last night); sounds plausible enough.

Default The subject of the tale is obvious really...

This song is set in 60s/70s
The term witness referrs to police witness
The table is the only item of furniture in an interview room other than chair
The nature of the crime is unstated
The police have little or no sympathy "what were you doing there" is evockative of the attitude of you asked for it!
The police at that time in UK were notorious for "testing" the suitability of women victims as witnesses by means of "rigourous" questioning.
Your taxi is here, the police always sent the persons home in a taxi, one so the neighbours wouldn't know they had been speaking to the police and two to save police resources.

So indeed, the crme can only be imagined but the rest is very straightforward!

Wasn't there a speculation that Northside Clapham Common was a gay cruising area ( I think David Bret suggested this so it's probably not true)?

    She's been raped.

The police are unsympathetic because they normally were to rape victims in them days, they just want to get home for their tea.

The fact that she has learning disabilities and cannot communicate means they are even more impatient to get to the pub.

It is not Morrissey being unsympathetic. It is the narrator.

In Daddy's Voice he is not being sympathetic at all. He is taking the piss out of "Daddy".

Why don't you write me anymore, Codreanu?

The frisbee part is confusing. The UFO explanation seems plausible- but why go to court over that? Maybe someone got hit in the head with one- there's a park over here with Disc Golf, and if you're running or biking by not paying attention, you'll get whacked in the head with a frisbee. I don't think she was raped, because to me, she isn't the center of the case, just the center of the song- 'If only she had never volunteered...'

Hmmm do you know, what occurs on Clapham Common? Furthermore have you ever been there?

    It is very true, apparently.

Default "Overcast the night; The starry welkin cover... drooping fog as black as Acheron"

    > Why don't you write me anymore, Codreanu?

The truth? I have been "troubled" lately and very sullen in regard; overcast. When my mood is again a pale sequence of sunlight, sifting sky-blue blossoms from broken thunder-clouds, then our correspondence will renew. Say a prayer, will you?

Ah, so the scene is that of a courtroom? But the testimony concerns an event from only the night before and the behaviour almost too uninhibited (crying on the floor... standing on the table). I thought Reggie's suggestion (see below) a very good enabling frame for the action, provided the "crime" remains unexplained.

Default Yes, very frosty. Ah, look what I found...

Is it the almond shaped eyes? The golden skin? The dark, silky hair? Maybe it is the combination of the three. Whatever it is, it is breathtaking! I hope I am an Indian woman in my next lifetime. But one in the upper caste of course. Or better still, be born far in the future when castes and dowries no longer exist, but the sari remains the same. (Led Zeppelin plug, hehe.)

It's set in a police station. I've always assumed she was found by the police on Clapham Common.

I think the frisbee is just a way of saying there are loads of clues to the "incident" that the police don't understand. Maybe she was playing frisbee in the park with friends before she was attacked?

There were several good ones of Madhuri near the bottom... most of them seem a little dated though; the picture of Mamta Kulka on the bottom right is infatuating!

Besides Madhuri, I think Sonali Bendre (another Maharashtrian) a gorgeous bollywood belle; a distant second!
