I remember listening to John Peel and remember him playing as much,if not more crap stuff than good stuff.

I bet Radio 1 won't be playing all the odd stuff that he played.

CraP stuFF Peely neverrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

ObscuRe more the word I'd use..

Obscure and a fair share of crap stuff.

I see The Smiths' "How Soon is Now" has sneeked onto the 'tribute' album as track 3 on disc 2. Out this coming Monday.

Elcectic would be the word I'd choose Ali, not 'crap'. From listening to Peel I have grown to love:

The Smiths
The Mighty Wah!
James
Pixies
The Wedding Present
The Naturalites & Realistics
The Fall
Terry & Gerry
Barrington Levy
Half Man Half Biscuit
Cocteau Twins

bands who, at the time weren't played by anyone else than Peel (unless, say Peter Powell heard something and thought he'd do the same)

Crap?! May God strike you down!
I admit some of it was 'challenging', but just think how many incredible bands we would have missed if not for him. i.e. see list above.

John PeeL bought so many neW bands to attentioN... DunnO where I'd of been withouT him... Well him and AnniE Nightingale, they both should have an OBE in my opinion......

It's a shame there's no Mighty Wah! or HMHB on the tribute CD. They could have fitted them on if they'd dropped How Soon Is Now.

Oh wow! I had no idea.
Thanks mate. Have you seen them then?

Just because something is obscure doesn't make it good.

Re: I saw Mighty Wah! in London at the end of last year

Pete Wylie was angry about Peel's passing. I mean really angry.

Have you got 'Songs of Strength & Heartbreak' JoJo? It's terrific.

No I haven't!
Do I know nothing? Thank you for enlightening me anyway.
Is it just me being soft-hearted, or does anyone else come over all weepy if they ever hear Peel's voice these days? It's like hearing your favourite uncle.
I really miss him.

I never really liked his show, I found the Peel Show too hard to listen to. I believe that lots of bands would have made it with or without John Peel.

The Annie Nightingdale Show and The Evening Session on Radio 1, Street Level on Radio Tees and many other radio shows championed new music.

Why doesn't Radio 1 have a Tommy Vance or a Kenny Everette day?

Sinful!

Less than half an hour into the Peel special on Radio 1 and they played Smiths! "What Difference Does It Make?" I'd written in to the djs about John Peel and they called out my name right after the song! I'm dying for a recording of this, if anyone knows of where to find it- please reply here and let me know!
