I could be raving but I thought I read somewhere that it was a Bolan/ TRex reference??

Interesting thanks

all these years I thought he was saying, "first day with the Joy"

Wasn't it written around the time the Tories were re-elected?

I thought the "everyone lies" line was a reference to people paying lip service to social justice but when the chips were down voting for their own selfish reasons.

I still remember the crushing disappointment the day after the election (this was in the days when we still had some faith in the Labour Party)

hmmm Glamourous Glue?

I think this song goes against COnservative and Labour politicians as well as the people who vote for them

Perhaps I should clarify that I thought the title was a TRex ref not the content.

Makes sense the Musically it is very Glam

Well you would, you haven't decided why an apple is not an orange yet!

> Well you would, you haven't decided why an apple is not an orange yet!

Its more of an orange than a Swede

> Its more of an orange than a Swede

Why is that then?
Because both contain pips?
Are you a Swede, please?
I thought you were British.

err i am indeed English

My reasoning may be a little dodgy, but i believe a swede has to be peeled and cooked. A apple can be eaten raw, and its up to you whether or not you want to peel it. Apples also come in various varieties, including Pink Lady

Well a turnip can be eaten raw too, if it pleases the palate.

Who said swedes had to be boiled? Was that Hitler?

I must admit, I've never met anyone who cares to include raw turnip in their sadlad, then again, I've never played tennis with cliff richard.

Re: About sniffing glue because

Sniffers of glue habitually put strong adhesives, solvents etc in jam jars so that they can be sniffed. LASID is wrong by suggesting that the use of 'jar' is meaning a pint glass. For a better understanding go through the lyric replacing "with the jar" with "sniffing glue" and it'll all look clearer. Obviously there is nothing glamorous about sniffing glue, which is why it's such a genius name for a song, and he never actually mentions glue, but you're supposed to know what he means.

First day sniffing glue
You find
Everyone lies
First day sniffing glue
You find
Everyone lies, nobody minds
Everyone lies
Where is the man you respect ?
And where is the woman you love ?
Where's the woman you love ?
Third week sniffing glue
You find
Everything dies
We won't vote Conservative
Because we never have
Everyone lies, everyone lies
Where is the man you respect ?
And where is the woman you love ?
Where's the woman you love ?
Everything of worth
On Earth
Is there
To share
I used to dream, and I used to vow
I wouldn't dream of it now
We look to Los Angeles
For the language we use
London is dead, London is dead
London is dead, London is dead
London is dead, London is dead
Now I'm too much in love
I'm too much in love

I know
I'll go
Empty hand

I could swear at times he sings "first day on the job", I was surprised at the "jar" thing as well.

Re: raw turnips are good for Irratable Bowels

oh i'll tell cliff

I think the whole point of the Jar thing is that this symbolises not having a job and just sitting around with a Jar all day

??

but it's about, (at least in part), sniffing glue! The clue is in the song title.

Really, thats your take on it, a Jar is slang for a pint. Glamourous glue could mean something altogether a bit more lude.
