My friend just saw Regina at the Paris gig. This is what she had to say: "WOW! BANG! Regina S. was awesome. I have to admit that I had heard little of her stuff, but she was really really great live. She is all shy and soooo charismatic at the same time. It really was a lovely gig. She is funny, pretty, clever and has an incredible voice. Bjork meets Tori Amos. She was by herself on the keyboards. She had put clothespegs on her T-shirt, had this massive taffeta skirt. Someone in the audience gave her flowers at the end of the gig, she was really touched. Highly recommended. I'll listen to her stuff on record as well."

Also, Keane is on The Tonight Show tomorrow night.
Did you get the CD yet?

Ohh cool. Most of the reviews I've read of her performances are pretty glowing. I like that shy and charismatic at the same time description. That's my impression too.

I did get the CD, but I haven't played it yet!! I've had kind of a frantic week. I gotta catch up on email too.

Yay, the weekend is here.

Maybe you will get some time to relax.

I got two bottles of wine from Trader Joe's! Italian Pinot Grigio and Chilean Chardonnay. Two bottles for 10 bucks, you gotta love Trader Joe's. I'm gonna watch anime DVDs, eat crackers with Jarlsberg cheese, and drink up!

I'll let you know what I think of the CD as soon as I play it a few times.

Oh that sounds wonderful.

I love anime. I stumbled upon some guy's website the other day. He has a bunch of download freebies. I downloaded 'Dress My Babe.' The opening window makes you think it is gonna be real sleezy. But, it is actually pretty cool. I got a kick out of it anyhow.

That's cool. I'm not very knowledgable about anime but I do like watching it when I can figure out a good title to rent. I have a few real cool ones in my DVD collection. "Perfect Blue" is probably my fave, but there are a lot of cool ones!

You mention sleazy below. One of the ones I have on deck to watch this weekend might be real sleazy and...perverted. It's called "Kite," the uncut version. I just wanna see it because it's about a female asassin. I have a thing for female asassins!! hahaha But it says on the front: "Absolutely not for children." And on the back: "this is the definitive release of one of anime's most controversial titles ever." Hmm, I've seen a few pretty perverse animes, so I don't know what I'm in for! :o

Okay this is loading right now. I wonder what have you sent me to - I see a naked cartoon ass as it's loading! LOL

Oh wow, I get to dress a cute anime girl!

What are the "Secrets"???

Hmm.

Okay, now I have her with a red backround, and angel wings...can't decide on the hair!

Oh shit, you can make her naked! Not that I would do that. Let me get some clothes on her pronto!

I have her with a black bikini, white angel wings, red backround, black mask over her mouth, red hair in sort of a pony tail sticking up, and snow.

Dammit what are the secrets?!?!

I do like dressing an anime girl. I hope that doesn't make me a weirdo. It was YOUR link.

Well, it may be even weirder that I like dressing her. Haha. I never found out what the secrets were either. Maybe it is a secret.

Female assasins -- cool. I just read the review. It is billed as an anime La Femme Nikita. Sounds interesting.

I think anime can be very erotic. I saw a video once and these characters were able to do all sorts of things that us mortals could only dream about.

I am a newbie to anime as well. I will have to checkout "Perfect Blue." I just read the synopsis for it. It sounds really good.

Re: hentai

You're right, that IS weirder! :p

Except a female into that might be cool in an Angelina Jolie from the movie "Hackers" kind of way. But a guy into that might be suspected of being just a...geeky fanboy.

When you do the puzzle it supposedly gives you hints. The hint I got said there are two secrets per backround, but I still couldn't figure it out.

Yeah some of them are kind of erotic, I agree.

I wanna look into how the big eyes thing got started and why. Do you know?

At the very beginning of the movie you'll think it's ridiculous, like some Japanese teenybopper pop thing. But then it goes in a really weird direction and gets crazy.

For a kids oriented movie, "The Castle of Cagliostro" is highly entertaining.

(What's weird about that one, though, is the subtitles are G rated but the dubbing would have to be considered PG. That's gotten me really freaked out about translations of foreign movies in general - the translators can really change things and who knows how close it is to the original language!)

I found this explanation for the reason that the eyes are so big.

"Fred Ladd, who imported Astroboy to national television in the US during the 1960s, explains that anime characters got their big eyes from Betty Boop, one of Osamu Tezuka's favorite characters. Tezuka's Astroboy (in Japan, Tetsuwan Atom), was a runaway success in Japan, prompting other studios to imitate what Tezuka was doing, including the eyes."

http://web.mit.edu/anime/www/culture-notes.html#big_eyes

That is true about translations. Though I prefer subtitles to dubbing. Remember those old Godzilla movies that were dubbed? The soundtrack was always off, haha. I wonder if they can still be found on video somewhere?

PS -- I think Angelina Jolie is very sexy. She brings out the bi in a lot of women, I think.

Coolio! Thank you for solving this mystery for me! It's really a nice stylistic thing, those big eyes.

As far as subtitles and dubbing, every time I watch a DVD that has the option of both I do a comparison and am often shocked at the differences. It's nice to hear the real actors' voices and so forth, but they often chop out a lot of the dialogue for subtitles because they figure people can't read too much. So my conclusion is...I'd like to have both on a DVD, but to have it be perfect you probably have to learn the language!! Dubbing can be annoying, but sometimes it's done well. There's technology to even make the lips move with the dubbed-in language.

With Godzilla, they radically changed the American version, even adding an American actor!

She sure did win the genetic lottery. Is she bisexual herself, or was that just to get attention?

I think Angelina is bisexual. Before she became famous, she was supposedly living with her female lover. Now the tabloids claim that she is dating Brad Pitt. I can see those two having sexual chemistry, but she seems much more intelligent than him. Or maybe his intellect just doesn't come across on screen.

DVDs are great. I watched "The 25th Hour" with the screenwriter's commentary on. I learned so much about the movie, directing, and the screenwriting process.

One of the best dubbed films that I have seen is "Life is Beautiful." That little boy had the cutest voice. But, it is one of those films that is so emotionally intense, that I don't think I could watch it more than a few times -- sort of like "Shindler's List."

Yeah, Brad Pitt comes across as a bit of an airhead in interviews.

Not a bad actor though. I'm fond of 12 Monkeys especially. Although the lovely Madeleine Stowe gave the REAL top performance in that one.

I sure do wish Hackers was a better movie because Jolie looks un believable in it. Her eye makeup is really cool in it. It's hot when she makes that hacker bet with the guy and if he loses he has to be her SLAVE. As if that shouldn't be the grand prize for if he WINS!

I've never seen The 25th Hour. Is it a fave of yours?

I kinda like when they have outsiders doing the commentary tracks. Like, on the Basic Instinct DVD they have one of my personal idols, Camille Paglia, doing the commentary and she really did her homework beforehand! On the Dark City DVD, Roger Ebert does a terrific commentary.

What I hate is when it's just, like, the cast, and they're winging it, or just yapping abou the coffee they're drinking as they watch. I demand commentaries where they prepare beforehand, dammit!

I've seen it. Excellent movie, I agree.

The 25th Hour is really good. I watched it twice without commentary, then once with the SW's. I am a huge Willy Wonka fan. Have you seen the DVD for it? The kids, now grown-up, comment on the movie as one watches. I was really impressed by how intelligent and knowledgeable about the film that they all were. Also each seemed to be very well adjusted as an adult. Charlie became a veternarian. Unfortunately, he lost his cuteness. That was kind of a let down, as I had a big crush on him as a child.

I am looking forward to the remake by Tim Burton. I think it comes out July 15th. Ya gonna go see it?

OMG, Gene Wilder was on Conan last week! It was so cool to see him!! What a wonderfully cool man he still is.

You've convinced me to check out the Willy Wonka DVD. In fact, I'm gonna buy that one. God knows why I haven't already.

And of course I'll see the remake!

I hate to admit when pretty boys are good actors, but Depp's another one I must acknowledge. I'm sure he'll be fantastic.

Yes, I saw Gene Wilder. He seemed very happy. They have a sing along feature on the DVD as well. It is a must have, if you love the movie.

Depp seems to be the only guy that could pull it off. He was great with the physical comedy in Benny and Joon -- doing the Buster Keaton skit. I loved that movie as well.

Have you see the movie Matilda? That's another movie based on Roald Dahl. I like it a lot! For a kids movie I mean.

Benny and Joon is wonderful. It is one of my favorite movies.

Mary Stuart Masterson is in it. She was also in Fired Green Tomatoes and Some Kind of Wonderful (It is one of my fave 80's, teen angst movies by John Hughes.) http://www.fast-rewind.com/

I have only seen the very beginning of Matilda.
I will try to get that one from the library on Thursday.

I looked it up on IMDB.COM, and now I see I have heard of it. It looks cool.

It's a most charming kids movie.

"So Matilda's strong young mind continued to grow, nurtured by the voices of all those authors who had sent their books out into the world like ships on the sea. These books gave Matilda a hopeful and comforting message: You are not alone."

I developed a crush on Miss Honey afterwards, only heightened by another excellent movie she made, "Mansfield Park."

"Benny & Joon" is one of my very favorite movies. Johnny Depp was brilliant in it, especially the Charlie Chaplin sequence I love that quotation, btw, it reminds me of someone....ME!
