Do you guys like New York's new pop star, Regina Spektor?

I'm kinda digging her album "Soviet Kitsch."

It took me several listens to start liking it, but I've decided it's pretty good and she has it in her to make a truly great album next time around.

I was just Googling around to see what the consensus of the critcs is and it seems very mixed, with her being called a cross between Tori Amos, Bjork, and Patti Smith, and too "precious" and "self-indulgant." Someome was also attacking her for passing out chocolates at shows, but I find that adorable!

I didn't notice the Patti Smith influence myself, but now that I think of it, I do hear it now. I don't like Tori Amos at all and that caused my initial resistance to the album. And yes, sometimes she does channel a bit of Bjork in her vocal stylings.

My initial resistance was also caused by the self-indulgance. But I've now decided that's a plus. It makes the album playful and loose...and without the kind of generic cookie cutter songs so many other new artists are putting out these days.

As I played the CD while laying in bed this morning, I also realized how beautifully produced it is. It almost felt like Regina was in the same room as me playing around on my piano. In one song she has a cute human beat box moment and that's when I really fell for her. As she sings on one song, "Yeah I'm so cool I'm so cool I'm so cool...." Yes you are, Regina.

It has a few tracks that aren't up to par (in particular, her attempt at a rocker comes off pathetically), but I recommend the album if you want something fun and different.

She's also easy on the eyes.

Hey Cleveland, I was thinking that you were Belligerent Ghoul as well -- even when you were posting as Theo. I thought the name "Theo Van Gogh's Martyrs Brigade" was a ruse to distract people from the fact that you are BG, who is a Muslim. Haha. I don't know what to think. Your info regarding Cleveland seemed to be info from Google rather than someone who actually lived in that city.

Well, I really do live in Cleveland Heights, and most of my childhood I lived in Shaker near the border of Beachwood (by the intersection of Green Road and Shaker Blvd.). As a teenager I lifeguarded at Thornton Park.

Yeah, you can kinda tell she's super nice from the album...and the DVD that comes with it.

Do you know if her previous releases are any good? I think she did two other albums, but only one is still available. I wonder if it's worth getting.

I hope "Soviet Kitsch" catches on. She's a breath of fresh air if you ask me.

I am listening to "Us" at the moment. I love the piano combined with her strong vocals. I like it.

If you have the whole CD, the song that's my fave today is the one right before "Us." Called Flowers something, I forget. The ending of that song turns me on almost as much as her adorable human beat box thing around the word "style" in the middle of "Chemo Limo."

I wish I was better at piano. I have a piano, Bertie. I inherited it. It's the nicest thing I own probably, and I can barely play anything on it at all. I keep sitting at it pretending I'm on stage and am about to play something marvelous. But then I can't. I wish I could play it. Do you play anything? I feel like if I could play it I'd finally be a happy person. Who cares what bad things happen to me, I could come home and play lovely music on my piano. I wonder if Regina would come over and give me private lessons. She owes me, don't ya think? Because I just sold her CD to you! But she'd be prejudice against me because I did an evil thing and voted for Bush. I saw on her web site blog she was all upset when Bush won. It made me feel guilty. I felt like a real shitter. I helped Bush win and Bush's win upset Regina. I didn't know about her when I voted! I'll have to keep that hush-hush if I meet her. I should just swear off politics for the rest of my life and dedicate myself to my piano. But I'm lazy and it seems hopeless to learn it. Hmm, oh well, I'll deciate myself to television then. I'm good at that.
