Have to go there for work in a couple of weeks...

Any good pub or club recommendations?

Think i'm staying in the Clifton area, what's it like?

Anywhere i should avoid?

I go occasionally. It's awful to drive, it's one of those places with a horrendous one way system shunting you into lanes with no idea if you're going in the right direction cos someone forget to actually put a signpost up! Parking is expensive too. I don't know about pubs/clubs as I usually just go for the day. The waterfront is full of trendy cafes and bars but I've no idea what it's like at night. The Watershed arts centre seemed OK. Sorry I can't be of any more help.

Make sure you pay a visit to the Star & Garter and then go to the Bristolian in the morning to recover... That's all you need to know, really.

I like the Black Swan, but i doubt most Smiths fans would go for it.

clifton is one of the best areas of bristol,and it has a real village feel to it.there are many cafes,restaurants and pubs.it also has a large number of students,as well as home owners,and lets face it you don't get a lot for your money-so basically its a well off area.
its up to you where you eat etc,but i would recommend a restaurant at the bottom of queens rd,near the juntion with whiteladies road,called the sands.its a lebanese restaurant and excellent value for money,whether you are vegetarian or omnivore.
areas to avoid...well the city centre after closing time is well dodgy,also any of the large estates,but its unlikely you would be going there.
beware too,st pauls,easton and the other areas to the east of the city are seriously dangerous...be bloody careful if you insist on going there.
the docks area/waterfront,call it what you will these days,is an excellent area too,there is loads going on there and make sure you visit.
also,and finally,if you are in town when city are playing go and see them-yes i am one of the faithful.
whatever,enjoy yourself in the west countries capital.
