We hear a great deal at present about how the trolls are the scourge of this website, but let us not forget, Morrissey himself has been trolling the Music Industry for over 20 years & if any of us are the true heirs to his legacy, it's the trolls.
What an absurd claim I hear you cry. Well, let's examine the evidence shall we.
Morrissey's violent statements denouncing anyone & everyone, comments about Thatcher, The Royal Family, Animal Rights, Charity records, other singers and groups, the BBC, Joyce & Rourke, & even Johnny Marr, without whom....The list is, if not quite endless, then it is infinitely longer than the combined pronouncements of all of his contempories combined.
I could say more, & indeed give quotes & dates, but this is only a message on a discussion board, not a Babylon Book.
Of course, the fact that we tend to agree with most of what he says on the above subjects excuses him from any blame, on the contrary, the iconoclastic savaging of the established order merely endears him to us all the more.
Even when the flippant remarks turn into a more dark & considered hatred, such as the expressed desire that Johnny Rogan is burnt to death in a hotel fire or dies horribly in a road traffic accident, or that Mike Joyce is castigated with such venom as to leave no one in any doubt how much Morrissey loathes & detests him.
Virtually every interview brings forth another verbal volley with Morrissey spitting out salvoes of scorn & derision on a succession of familiar targets.
As yet I haven't touched on the so-called "racist" nature of some of his remarks over the years, but as the politically correct brigade on this site are poised & ready to pounce on any person who uses unfashionable language or doesn't appear to tow the party line, I think it would be pertinent to remind ourselves of the many ambiguous & unapologetic remarks, both in his work & in interviews, that Morrissey has made.
There have been many withering put downs of other, predominantly Black musical genres, such as Rap and Reggae, & the statement that went somewhere along the lines of "it seems that, by rights, one must be Black to appear on Top of the Pops these days" uttered in the mid 80's.
Added to this is the deliberately provocative nature of song lyrics & onstage props & refusal to deny the accusations of racism at the time they were most intense, thereby defusing the situation & leaving no-one in any doubt as to his true opinions.
It's also interesting that he very rarely works with any non-caucasian & that the vast majority of his collaborators have been British, usually English.
Jesse is the one of the rare exceptions to this "rule"(?), & even his recruitment could be seen as further pandering to his Latino fanbase (oye esteban, 'hector' from FOTGTD, 'Mexico' "skin, hair, teeth, what a combination!" from The Importance of Being Morrissey etc.)
The recent remark in the NME about "how many asylum seekers can be allowed to "flood in" to the UK" was another case in point. I'm sure if anyone on this site would have made that statement, then the Net Nazis/PC Brigade would have had a field day.
In conclusion, Morrissey has always lashed out at anything that he finds annoying or upsetting, just as the trolls on this site do, & he continues to do so without any apology, making remarks & statements that could be, & often are, considered racist or offensive, just as the trolls do on this site.
None of this is meant as an attack on Morrissey's morality or a condemnation of his behaviour.
On the contrary, part of the reason I love him is his fearlessness & his almost pathological need to be honest, whatever the cost, & I think that cost has been great down the years as the Industry itself, supported by the Music TV stations & Music Media, have repeatedly tried to marginalise him or even end his career alltogether.
So the next time you are clamouring for sanitised message boards & calling for the head of some old queen or other, pause for thought & remember that Morrissey is the true king of the trolls.
