On the whole, the B-sides are a very solid whereas the album is more inconsistent, with some really highlights punctuated with songs which are slightly underwhelming.
What’s notable is that if some of the weaker songs on Quarry, such as ‘America . . .’ and some of those towards the end such as ‘Lazy Dykes’ and ‘I Like You’ had been deployed as B-sides and replaced by ‘Daddy’s voice’, ‘It’s Hard to Walk Tall’, ‘Friday Mourning’ and Never played Symphonies’, this would have resulted in a very, very good album as opposed to a decent one. What has been heart warming is that there have been very few real disappointments – I think that only ‘I Am Two people’ and perhaps ‘Lazy Dykes’ are poor songs.
