I was just listening to "my" Yahoo Launchcast station, and THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE was just played. As i was listening I went to a lyrics site so I could follow along with the lyrics as I listened.

While at the lyric site (http://www.lyricsdownload.com/) I did some looking and saw that a number of other performers have a song named THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE including Glenn Campbell, Black Sabbath, UB40 and Sinead O'Conner. I was curious if these other people had covered this song but all but Sinead's are a different song with the same title.

As a side note, I didn't know Sinead covered this song...does anyone know where it is located, and if it is any good?

So as I look at the lyrics, which are submitted by people, I see for the Sinead version, these lyrics "climb upon my sunny bones...". Now granted, I have not heard her version, so these may be what she sings, but I doubt it. I had to laugh that someone thought that that is what was being sung, when the correct line is "Climb up on my knee, sonny boy"

I just love this song. I know at the "It May All End Tomorrow" site (http://www.oz.net/) that it has commentary that this song may be about child abuse, "...This haunting tune is often interpreted as referring to child abuse, and it's easy to see why : "I once had a child", "Although you're only three", "you're mine", "together we lie", and the general tone of threatening care..."

I never saw this song in that light. I always pictured it as a father with a child, loving/comforting
"...And when darknesss lifts and the room is bright
I'll still be by your side
For you are all that matters
And I'll love you to till the day I die
There never need be longing in your eyes..." him because the child was scared/frightened.
"Please don't cry
For the ghost and the storm outside
Will not invade this sacred shrine
Nor infiltrate your mind
My life down I shall lie
If the bogey-man should try
To play tricks on your sacred mind
To tease, torment, and tantalise..."

Am I all wet in my interpretation?

this song and THIS NIGHT HAS OPENED MY EYES are some of my all time favorites actually bringing tears at times.

Rock on!

In my opinion the lyric to THTRTC is the best Morrissey has ever written.

How absolutely ludicrous it would be to hear a Black Sabbath version of Morrissey's 'THTRTC.
