Fade to grey?

What are peoples views on song fade outs?

I prefer a proper ending myself and I`m not just talking of Morrissey but songs in general. To me, a fade out is a cop out....couldnt think of an ending so gradually fade the music to silence...Fade ups too the same.On stage a song ends not fades away so I like album tracks to do the same.

One exception to this rule in my view is Five Years by David Bowie, where the drums fade up at the beginning and fade down at the end.It fits in with the song.

Anybody know of any other songs where a fade out is more appropiate than an ending?

What a strange question.. A big ending is always required in my book.. or even a great drawn out ending, or outro, as its properly referred to. Take Blurs 'Beetlebum', Pulps 'Sunrise', or Radiohead's 'Karma Police' for three examples of the best outro's EVER!! though I'd like hear of other peoples votes for great endings..

A fade out is a cop out in my opinion.. show's a lack of imagination!

Can't fault 5 Years as a song though. Anything off Ziggy and the spiders is Genius though.

Alright there Ruff. Oh I'm quite keen on the fade outs myself, 'Some girls are bigger than others' and 'I wont share you' fade out wonderfully well bringing their respective albums to a close, especially that harmonica on 'I won't share you'.

Ok point taken for those mentions!! but GENERALLY speaking.. a great end is essential. Check out the Stranglers B-side 'Tits' where they played all the great rock n roll endings just for fun.. It was the little white single that came free with early editions of Black&White I believe.

That is in indeed spot on, 'Tits' was on the b side of Walk on by (my favourite all time cover I must add), which was given away with the first 25,000 copies of Black & White. Although it was later officially released as a single itself, strangely enough, and as a result of it being given away with the album didn't do as well as it could have done.

Altogether now - "She's got 38-24-36 tits, she's got 38-24-36 tits, she's got...."
