Why would ALain have left? He wrote some fantastic material on Quarry.

How reliable is the rumour that Alain's actually gone? It seems weird that he would have stuck with Morrissey for so long in the wilderness, and suddenly he'd leave just as Morrissey's the most popular he's ever been.

Alain is still missing. Somebody must have asked Moz something about him at the beginning cause he said "He's not here. I don't know what to tell you", or something like that.

that doesnt sound like alain is sick. also things have been heated for a while and suppossedly it came to a head in dublin.

plus the fact that moz is more popular now than he's ever been doesnt really mean much. fame doesnt bring happiness and if you notice by the Q's special edition they dont even mention the band or alain, so, as an aspiring song writer, it would seem to be a pretty bummer job to write songs for a man for 10+ years and get no recognition for it. most the fans on this board dont even like alain much less the press. plus he has his own thing he wants to get going. so who knows, I think the mozzer probably pissed him off and he's holding out to see if alain calms down and comes back to the band, this tour and promotion for this album could be really fucked if alain quits.

Poor Morrissey. He seems to be doomed to having constant speculation being passed off as truth. No wonder he has to run away and hide every now and then.

Yeah, I thought that was completely unjust. Much as I'm not convinced that "... Quarry" is the masterwork people are saying it is, Alain has written some absolutely sterling songs in the last 12 years.

Given that there was a lot of space devoted to Joyce and Rourke, neither of whom were songwriters, it was incredibly unjust that there weren't articles on Alain or Boz. Moz's band are amazing live, and should probably get a lot more kudos than they do.

It's certainly sad if he has gone.

seriously, if there were any problems within the band, i would have thought boz would have bolted first. why? because he at least had other projects outside of mozzer's stuff. alain had seemed to position himself in such a way that he strictly worked for moz and that was it. like the latest band he was in with the other members of the moz band and how it quickly and quietly dissipated once moz decided to spring back into action.

I love Alain. Could I ask everybody to stop second guessing and support Alain while he is ill? He's wrote songs with Mozz that probably saved your life. Certainly, made it more bearable.

No, I always felt Boz is Morrisseys right hand man.. Alain is the better guitarist, arguably, and probably has more to say for himself.. if it did come to a 'head'. See Morrissey on Jools Holland, who does Moz shout to in his band, instinctively, to answer a question from Jools? Boz of course.

If it was a falling out.. this would be intersting to get the backstage word on!

Interestingly though, a mate from Glen Ridge was saying a critic wrote (maybe in the NY times) that Morrisseys band are 'limited' musically.. And I must say, YATQ is pretty 'basic', although decently played etc etc, musically. IS there a time when you bring in new blood?? Or am I being controversial.

Maybe someone close to him has died or something.

I see Alain's birthday is coming soon (July 3rd, 1967) maybe it's an early
    mid-life crisis.

    Morrissey, you've done it now!

Surely ahering to the Morrissey code of conduct is the main priority ahead of musical ability. Not that Alain ad Boz aren't fine guitarists.

    I agree with your opinion.

I have been watching old Smiths videos of live concerts.
Here are my opinions of what I see then, what I see now and what I'd like to see (and hear!)

    1. Johnny Marr alone on stage gives more than Alain, Boz and Mikey combined.
    2. Mike Joyce is clearly better than any other drummer Morrissey has worked with
    3. Alain is much more entertaining than Boz but that doesn't mean there aren't a lot of other guitarists out there who could write better songs
    4. Johnny Marr and Morrissey obviously didn't agree on the use of too many electronic sounds and I believe this, along with Johnny wanting to do work outside The Smiths were big points of contention. Since Morrissey let Jerry Finn do it (the electronics), wouldn't it make sense at this point in time to let Johnny Marr do it? I know it won't happen because this is an emotional situaion for them and I'm only looking at the practical.
    5. YATQ is a very good record but its not legendary and moving on to new musicians at this time is not a bad idea at all.
    6. Alain's solo work isn't very good. The songs aren't even interesting from a musical perspective.
    7. Alain is a great guy and I really hope he and his family are fine. This is only about the music, both in the studio and on stage.

Are you suggesting that you toe the company (Moz inc) line, don't rock the boat too much, keep supplying some tunes, however stimulating, and you'll get on OK? I WANT more for our man Radar!!

What's Keith Levene and Jah Wobble doing nowadays?

Yes but does the man himself want more than that ?

I hear there is a wayward element amoung guitar players, especially ones that attempt Sparks cover versions....
