Default Quarry is bookended by two sets of blue eyes. Worth commenting on?

Track 1: "America Is Not The World" describes the American President's "steely blue eyes" "with no love in them" "scanning the world."

The world belongs to those who don't feel.

In a world ruled by those who don't feel, that brings us, in contrast, to Morrissey. Whom you knew couldn't last.

And to Morrissey's blue eyes, in track 12.

Morrissey's music gives shelter to the things that unfeeling people who run this world put blinders on to. They put blinders on so as not to become paralyzed with sympathy, which would make them unable to act in a cold-hearted manner. Flourishing in this world seems like it requires a certain inability to feel, and can require one to view other human beings as if they are stones to walk over or kick out of the way, or chess pieces on a chess board.

At this point I'm cribbing from some thoughts in a book I'm reading that Morrissey recommended: The Book of Disquiet by Fernando Pessoa.

It gives an example of someone closing a business deal that would ruin a sick man's family. "As he negotiated he completely forgot this man existed, except as the opposing commercial party."

Much like the President, scanning and greeting the world with no love, warmth, or feeling.

Track 12: "You Know I Couldn't Last" mentions Morrissey's own blue eyes: "So don't let the blue/the blue eyes fool you."

    "Someone please take me home."

Am I a full of shit wanker? Thinking too much?

It can't be coincidental that the album begins with Bush's blue eyes and ends with Morrissey's.

    Back to Track 1:

And I, I have got nothing
    To offer you
    No-no-no-no-no
Just this heart deep and true
Which you say you don't need

    See with your eyes
    Touch with your hands, please
    Hear through your ears
    Know in your soul, please
For haven't you me with you now?
    And I love you

    Yes, it is worth commentary.

Oafy, please comment on the influence of Frank Sinatra (old blue eyes), Morrissey has been said to be soundchecking "MY WAY" and sang the first few lines in Manchester, and is friends with Nancy Sinatra. And whose "blue eyes" is he singing of in "You Know I Couldn't Last?" His? The critics? The Northern Leeches? Do these lines make sense:

    so don’t let the blue
    the blue eyes fool you
    they’re just gelignite
loaded and aiming right between your eyes

That actually has crossed my mind too. Because not only is he singing bits of "My Way," but he recently commented that Frank sinatra once found himself low and all his friends turned on him, then he made a comeback. He's been comparing Sinatra's career to his own, I guess.

The title "You Are The Quarry" reads: "Morrissey, you are the Quarry." He has been the prey. But the cover sleeve has him weilding a Tommy gun. He's turning the tables, firing back, and settling scores.

I keep switching as to who the blue eyes in "You Know I Couldn't Last" belong to. Because of the lines: "They're just gelignite, loaded and aiming right between your eyes."

I'd like to hear what other people think.

Oafy, fair enough to have others chime in but how do you aim eyes between eyes?? No, not literally...

Well that's kinda why I started settling on them being Morrissey's blue eyes.

And the world has been aiming straight between them?

Don't let his eyes fool you, it's been taking it's toll?

Unlike unfeeling people such as Bush, who run the world. And who hears about prison abuse in Iraq and is out smiling and playing on the White House putt-putt green the next day, undisturbed.

I'm not really sure, to be honest. I'm asking for help. = )

I do think he's got more to say on the album than people are giving credit, seeing as how he claims that "You Are the Quarry" says everything he's been trying to say for the past 13 years!

Ah, well then, perhaps it is what you said before. He is turning the tables. As in:

Don't let my eyes fool you (so don’t let the blue the blue eyes fool you)

You Are The Quarry (they’re just gelignite loaded and aiming right between your eyes)

AND that all elusive (still mad at you for not commenting on my thread ) dual meaning...

so don’t let the blue the blue eyes fool you (the critics' eyes)

they’re just gelignite loaded and aiming right between your eyes (Morrissey, You Are The Quarry)

    Good point.

That person is a victim of the "world of crashing bores."

No, he is one of them.

He views pop music as "product."

    "Just a cd."

    Morissey makes albums.

    Works of art.

    With things to convey.

That person should leave and stick with "thicker than
pig-shit" pop singers who have "nothing to convey"
    on their "cds".

Default How do you aim with gelignite?

"You Know I couldn't" is for mine one of the standout tracks on the album, but this line always jars with me. I mean, gelignite detonates in an infinite number of directions from the source of the explosion.

It's a completely frivolous point, but I'm an anal retentive and this sort of thing always bugs me. And it has nothing to do with the rest of this thread. But I don't really care - I was going to wind up saying it somewhere.

No CB it is a valid point, one which has perplexed others. If one is going to speak of munitions, firearms, ballistics, etc., one should be technically precise, even a pop singer. I don't know very much about these things but I do know that when said errors are made, for example in films, people do notice and comment negatively. So, why should it be any different for music. from the Main Page:

"You Know I Couldn't Last" sounds like (Score:1)

David Bowie and Queen (Bohemian Rhapsody) rolled into one - a song some anonymous American '70's tribute band might have tried their hand at creating.

And the lyrics gelignite loaded and aiming..I had to laugh Moz sorry (maybe it's a new form of humour or "humor" even, who knows?) - How can you "aim" gelignite?!

& If it's in your eyes you'll be hoisted and splattered anyway if you try to detonate it.
    I had to laugh...

The way I'm taking "You Know I Couldn't Last" is that the hard-charged parts of the song are what's going on inside his head. There's the calm, slow parts, where he's calmly saying, "the whispering may hurt you...but the printed word will kill you" etc. Then the parts that explode, with "they're just gelignite", are his raging on the inside of his head, behind his eyes. There's a wild man in his head.

    But I don't know!
