Default That was a weird thread with my name in it down below. "Last 20 CDs you bought". My reply.

I was obviously being facetious when I asked one or two anonymous posters to list their taste. They didn't explain their attacks on "Quarry" whatsoever and I didn't know where they were coming from. I just find it hard to get a feel for all these anonymous people. Some other poster spazzed out for whatever reason. Hey anything to keep the place entertaining I guess. = )

Anyway, Chill listed some CDs she bought in the thread down below.

    > Adam Ant "Antics In The Forbidden Zone"

Is the Adam Ant album that Boz produced any good? I have nothing by Adam Ant.

    > Pixies "Surfer Rosa"
    > Frank Black "Frank Black"

Coolio. I have everything by Frankus Blackus Maximus. I recommend the Frank Black album "Teenager of the Year" and the Frank Black and the Catholics album "Pistolero", and the "Dog Gone" CD single (great covers on b-side) if you don't have those. "Teenager of the Year" is a perfect album for summertime. = )

    > Jesus And Mary Chain "21 Singles"

I have everything by them too. I only like about half the songs on most of their albums, but the ones I like I like very much. Even though William Reid is a moron.

Soon I'll have a link to my full music collection if anyone's interested in "going through my drawers". Misguided purchases, guilty pleasures, and all.

I can't remember my last 20 purchases, but the last two CDs I bought were classical. One was Arvo Part: Tabula Rasa / Fratres / Symphony No. 3, featuring some American violinist and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. Which only goes to show I am in full-on Morrissey mode, as Part's Tabula Rasa is featured in his Meltdown festival. There's another CD that has a better interpretation of Tabula Rasa (the first one that comes up on Amazon), but this one's wonderful too.

The other CD was Ravel's Bolero performed by the Cleveland Orchestra, which I once had before and accidentally lost somewhere in Chicago.....

Oh, and before that I got "The Question" by the Slackers, one of my current favorite bands.

The next CD I will buy is the new "Dino: The Essential Dean Martin", because my mom and I used to enjoy "That's Amore" when I was little.

Then, the week after next, PJ Harvey's album comes out, and I must get aquainted in prep for Mozzapalooza. = )

I don't have that one. The one I have is quite good -- a compilation of his stuff with the Ants and of his solo work. I wasn't an Ants fan until a few months ago when I went to see SATH and an Ants cover band played.

I may have to check it out. Frank Black is such a hoot in interviews. My favorite solo song of his is "I Heard Ramona Sing," but then it is one of his most Pixies-ish solo songs.

What site can you do that on again? A good friend of mine did that and showed me the link, but I've lost it (and I'm too lazy to look it up again, especially when I've got this godawful dial-up to contend with).

I was looking through my collection last night when I posted my 24 favorite albums and I realized how sucky my collection actually is. I mean, I have lots of good stuff, but I'm still not satisfied. I think I'll be buying a lot more records this summer. If only some of the old stuff I like wasn't so hard to find! (I'm having a devil of a time finding anything by Orange Juice in my town. I didn't even find any at Amoeba last time I went.)

I realize this qualifies as Indie Blasphemy, but I hate PJ Harvey. I think we've had that convo before though.

That's a great song, especially because it's about the other best band that ever existed, the Ramones.

I have a cassette tape of Frank visiting a college radio station while promoting his eponymous solo debut. He brought his acoustic guitar, chit-chats and sings some songs. Really nice, clownish dude. On "Ramona," he said he wishes the Ramones would pull a "Menudo" and continue on forever, with one day the band being lowered down into the stage after their final concert and the new Ramones rising up in their place, with Frank Black as the singer.

It was during the station's annual fund raiser, and he signed a bunch of CDs for them to give out as gifts to donors. He wrote things like "I'm A Star - Frank Black". On mine he wrote "Rock! Frank Black." = )
Anyway, thru that interview I found out that the song "Czar" is about John Denver's attempt to go into space with the Soviet cosmonauts. "I respect him for trying," said Frank.

Interesting, as well: He was asked what he'd have done with his life had he not gone into music. He said he'd be an archealogist, and then gave an anecdote of finding a pearl in the bones of a dug up dead person. Interesting because years later he wrote a song about this on a Catholics album.

    > What site can you do that on again?

There's one site called cd-tracker.com. I started doing it on there but didn't finish. Maybe I'll go back to CD Tracker or try to find somewhere else, or just do it on my word processor.

to HIM. Instead, he really is judging now CD lists which othes were indeed stupid enough to make for him.

(By the way, do you really think the ones who criticise the album do it for the sake of it? And, do you think they come here from the Madonna board or something??)

Weird. I dunno if I ever told you this, but I was accepted to Brown as an Old World Archaeology major. I still wonder what my life would have been like if I hadn't deferred enrollment and changed my mind about my major and decided that I wanted to spend the next four years a bit (okay, a lot) closer to home. In any case, Archaeology is way cool and if I have any free units in France, I may take a class on it at the Sorbonne.

CD Tracker is the one I was thinking of.

No I am asking Loafing Oaf, who claims to have the right to find out if it's "the right people" who judge the album.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said something to the effect that he wished a hug upon everybody he saw reading a good book. I feel a similar pang in respect to great music. Part's 'Fratres', Ravel, and, I recall, Gorecki's 'Symphony No. 3'...I feel a hug is in order. Dont worry it will be manly, with a few curt slaps to the back for good measure. Now then, if you ever feel the need for another one, please go out and buy Mahler's symphonies...

Thanks, and I shall seek out Mahler's symphonies on your advice.

Gorecki's Symphony No. 3 is incredible. I played that just the other night, and very loudly.

Good luck with your search for Orange Juice. 'you can't hide your love forever' comes with a Mccann Recommendation (rarer than hen's teeth).
May I also be so bold to recommend another album by a later Glasgow band, The Supernaturals. Their debut album ,'It Doesn't Matter Anymore', is a slice of blissful pop heaven. Go get 'em, girl!

They're one of the bands I've missed. I'll maybe have a look about to see if there's a compilation or something.
I'll play it when I've listened to YATQ often enough to quite like it. That might take a while.

LOL. Often enough to quite like it. I fear if I force myself to listen to it, I'll grow to hate it. So I'm limiting my intake. Anyway, I quite like what I've heard of The Pastels including that song they did with Jarvis Cocker as the Nu Forest. I've mentioned it before, but "I Picked A Flower" is terrific.

I'm scared to take YATQ out of the cd player in case I never put it back in again. So it's staying there until I quite like it.
I'll try to get hold of 'i picked a flower'. If they did a song with my mate Jarvis they're alright in my book. Although it probably means I'll have to buy another cd player to listen to it. Ah well, c'est la vie (you're not the only one who can speak French, y'know)

Tres bien, mon ami ecossais. The song is on "The Last Great Wilderness" -- a soundtrack they did for a British roadtrip movie of the same title.
