Why is Quarry so overrated by many critics?

I really wonder why almost every critic (at least in German speaking Europe) praises Quarry as a mature masterpiece. I'd wished for Morrissey to excel; but Quarry is mediocre or less :-( Sorry to say! There's hardly a forceful beat or melodic tune here. I even think Last of the gang is overrated. I personally love Crashing Bores, but that doesn't save the whole album. Some tracks are depressingly uninspired (musically). Do you REALLY believe those critics think that they hold a masterpiece in their hands? Or does everyone only terribly wish the album was as good as they would like it to be?

I agree, to some extent.

I think Morrissey's lyrics and voice (like taking a bath in melted butter!) are lovely on this album.

But I think the music is often uninspiring, with the exceptions of IBEH and First of the Gang. I just don't hear the band. And don't get me wrong, I don't expect the record to sound bombastic; it's just that the music seems to lack personality.

Maybe because it's the first album Morrissey has done since the Smiths which one can listen to from first track to last and not feel there are certain songs that damage the quality of the whole album.

Some people might wish this or that element from Morrissey's past work was more prevalent in this album. But taken for the album it wants to be, "Quarry" is a brilliant success.

I completely agree and I think this is the point many fans are missing. It's difficult when you have great fondness for the old albums to accept anything new at times. I've noticed from reading the board that many of the fans that dislike the new album are simply locked into thinking Morrissey's days of greatness are over. They then latch onto a couple lyrics they feel are weak and *bam* the whole album is tossed aside.

I'll admit that my first impression of some of the new songs wasn't all that great, but I was able to put aside what I was expecting and take in what I was actually getting and now I can't get it off my player. Quarry is an excellent album if you really give it a chance. As Loafing Oaf says, take it for the album it wants to be. Morrissey is back and it feels pretty damn good.
