Leaving all the recent excitement behind for a minute, can anyone tell me what Speedway is about please ? Or alternatively tell me where I might go to find out. Is it something that's been discussed on this site in the past ?

Apparently it's about Rudolf Hess. Morrissey has often mentioned the name Hess when he sings it live.

This is what I was told too, it's a cracking song but the Nazi connection is strange.

Sandy, this is what I've heard too.

I can't really understand why, but it appears he really did write a song about this Nazi, Hess. If you read a short biography of the man's life it's easy to see the connection.

The british press in general and the NME in particular and the way they treated Moz.

I always think Speedway is about Manchester, like many other of his songs, and is a deep-seated reference to Johnny Marr and the Smiths, the press, etc. betraying everything his life had led up to. The Speedway motorcycle track is in Belle Vue, Manchester, and Belle Vue, Kings Hall, is where Morrissey went to his first gig in '74, T-Rex and I read that it was the point in his life when he decided his future. Coming from Manchester, Belle Vue was the first place I thought of when I saw that song title, I'm not totaly sure but I feel there's a link, somewhere.
