Never played symphonies is the best music to come out of the man in a decade. I knew he still had it in him. I'm glad at least one of these tracks will stand with all of his other work. (not saying the others won't but this one clearly does)

the never played... is fucking awesome, and that is the consensus(is that
a word?) i don't know, i just know it's the best of the b sides and one
of my new all time favourites, very fucking good
This song stands with all of his best Smiths / Moz in terms of writing. You can't even fuck with the metaphor for a relationship that never happened as a "Never played symphony"
And "Black sky in the daytime. And I don't much mind dying" - It just doesn't get better than that.
Not to mention his soulful "Not literally, but metaphorically! " - classic again.
This stands with the best Smiths/Moz of all time.
Unfortunately, I don't think any of the other new stuff has the impact that this one does. It's almost out of place, really.

That falsetto bit about two thirds through is slightly horrible. Otherwise it's alright, in a fairly generic Moz-rock kind of way. Sounds like the kind of thing he should've put on the B-side to Boy Racer.
The never played symphonies 3/5
Aside from the similarity to the MLS song I mentioned below, this one sounds a bit like a showtune from a slightly fucked up West End theatre show. Not sure I like it, although it doesn't particularly offend me. For some reason I could tell it was going to have a gong at the end, which worries me slightly.

Was quite getting into this one, until it suddenly stopped. Definitely could've done with another verse. My pick of the three after one listen.
None of them are bad songs, but I must admit I'm a little disappointed. None of them sound like they should be on the album, put it that way.
Incidentally, I was having a pointless conversation with a mate the other day, wondering how the IBEH B-sides would fare in comparison to the B-sides to Alma Matters, the first single from his last album. On first listen, I'd have to say that none of them can hold a torch to I Can Have Both, although all three are better than Heir Apparent.

The Never Played Symphonies 5/5 a true masterpiece in classic Morrissey style.
Most bands would kill for an A-side this good.
It's Hard To Walk Tall When You're Small 4/5 simply lovely

Maybe that's why it's not on the album.
Maybe he can do this sort of stuff standing on his head, and he's just decided not to.
Oh, but he sounds so happy and serene.
Don't begrudge him.

Lyrically all three are very good. Unfortunately, the backing on It's Hard to Walk Tall... and Munich... is a bit too typical of the kind of stuff Alain and Boz come up with for that kind of track, which is disappointing.
As for The Never Played Symphonies - I'm still undecided. What I can say is that I don't particularly like the song that it reminds me of, although I can sort of hear what others are raving about in it. I certainly don't think it's among his best work, put it that way.

I don't just mean the lyrics are happy and serene. He's got a real twinkle in his voice on TNPS and he sounds so completely loveable and tease-able. My spellcheck tells me that's not a real word but it seems to fit.

I agree. Apart from the seriously painful falsetto misjudgement in It's Hard To Walk Tall... he sounds in great voice. In places you can really feel the meaning in his words, which is always great.

Morrissey doing falsetto, right back to the early days, is Morrissey giving notice that this part of the song is a bit bonkers.
All those people who sing in key...........well, those callow young things think falsetto is, like, difficult or clever or something. When Morrissey does falsetto it means he's lost control, ever so slightly.
Don't you think?

No. The end of Well I Wonder is one of the most beautiful and haunting vocals I've ever heard. Similarly, when he uses falsetto on - say - the "I need advice" bit in Miserable Lie, it's in keeping with the song because it's a bit shambolic and desperate.
On It's Hard To Walk Tall..., it just sounds like he's ballsed it up.

i will never like it's hard to walk... but the never played... is
just awesome, i know you will try and put it down, as usual

What are you on about "as usual"? I heard it for the first time just over an hour ago, and I've not said anything massively harsh about it.
I definitely don't think it's as good as you're saying, but that's just my opinion.

the other two are terrible, i'm not arguing with you at all,
it's an opinion, but most people like tuneful songs, and
TNPS is fantastic, but if you like the others fine, i will
not piss on your chips
