What's with those stupid sound effects? Why is the guitar solo buried under keyboards? The Late Show version sounded better. I'm getting very worried.

don't buy the album then, just listen to the craig kilbourn track till your
ears bleed
It sounds great and will be all over the radio this summer.
The Sunday Times clip is more indicative (and it sounds the same as the Late Show version only with a better vocal performance).
You might be right about the guitar solo, which was the only good part of the Late Show performance of the song, mind you, but it's too hard to tell from the French clip.

I think Finn has been less successful than Lillywhite with his addition of violins (reference: "Dagenham Dave" and "Reader Meet Author").
Although I like the part after Morrissey sings "smashed" and "human bones".
But again the quality of the clip is too poor.

I agree, there is way too much production on it.
(ie. It's too commercial and you can tell)
I'm disappointed Morrissey hasn't changed or added to the lyrics, except for "to go under the sod", here are some suggestions for the live rendition:
"Such a busy boy"
"Hector was the first of the gang to rob a blood bank, such a silly boy"
"Hector was the first of the gang to do community service"
"Hector was arrested for heart theft"
"And he stole from the rich and the famous"
"Hector was the first of the gang to get married and divorced"
"Hector was the first of the gang to lose his virginity ... in prison"
"Hector was the first of the gang to take his own life"
"You have never been in love!"
"You have never been in love until you've stalked my (Morrissey's) house"
"We are the petty, pretty thieves and you're standing on our feet"
