I could be (and probably am) WAY off, but I always assumed that he used "nine leaf clover" instead of "four-leaf clover" to imply that the individual in question was even more fortunate or blessed ("the Saints smile shyly down on you") than someone who had found a four-leaf clover (nine-leaf clovers not even existing - but then, do four-leaf clovers?)

Nine-leaf clovers DO exist! Through mutation, clovers can get various amounts of leaves.

not to be a complete arse, but did you know that "lucky Lisp" is a joke based on the song "Lucky Lips" as sung by Cliff Richard and others in the sixties...

Note the clover ref there too!
