Smuggling it in shouldn't be too difficult, though usually fans are frisked on entry. Actually using it would be more difficult as it may be easy to be spotted by stewards.
    That's the gamble!

Well where do you want to go to???
Shouldn't be a problem with a taxi - it's 2am when it is difficult when the world and his wife pile into the streets at club closing time. There is a taxi rank outside Victoria Station, where the MEN Arena is built over.
When the gig finishes, the buses and trams will still be running for a while longer, but as I say, tell me what area you are going to and I can answer more fully.

    Default wandering through Manchester

What's Manchester like on a Saturday night...I'm a southern softee who's got to walk from the Novotel on Dickinson Street to the MEN...I think it's about a mile. Am I likely to encounter any bother - if so where should I avoid?

Manchester is exactly the same as any other town or city on a Saturday night. Or any other night. One week you can be at a bus stop waiting and 4 dickheads will walk past and give you shit, the other week nothing will happen.
As long as you keep yourself to yourself and stick to the main roads you are fine.
If you want to make a scene and draw attention to yourself then you will get your just deserves.
Just keep an eye on what's going on around you and be aware of your surroundings and you will be OK.

Big signs all round the place "No Photographic or Recording Equipment Allowed, anyone found in posession will have equipment confiscated under the VERO jurisdiction", or something like that.
I'm sure you'll get a moby fone in, tell them it's for emergency purposes.
