He's an old hero of mine I must say, I saw him just two weeks ago and was lucky enough to have got his autograph last year at the Union Chapel, highbury.

However, I'm sure his anecdotes are the same each time (did he recount his Alice Cooper 'Only Women Bleed' story), but his rye and amusing comments are necessary to relieve the sometimes sad theme of his songs..

'jane was much happeier then!'

Ruffian

PS, and as mentioned before, he still looks like Jimmy 'Your face or mine' Carr

The only reason I'm going to see SLF when they play here in a month or so is to see if Jake Burns anecdotes will be exactly the same for the 10th consecutive year.

Personally I think Jake Burns should split the set with Bruce Foxton, and let him do all the Jam songs that he sung on, but none of his solo stuff though - oh no.

SLF

Have you ever seen them perform their version of 'Doesn't Make It Alright', Radar? Have they played it live in recent years?

They played it when I saw them a few months ago. They were excellent.

It was part of the set when I first saw them back in 1992, I think this was the 'Flags and Emblems' period. Anyway it was dropped for ages, but they have started playing it again recently.

They are a great live band, but I don't own any of their records anymore. Apart from that Jake Burns solo album, 'On Fortune Street' which features Kirsty MacColl on one of the tracks called 'She Grew Up'. Naturally I wouldn't get rid of that.

Haha.. Very amusing to think of people doing the same inter-song material year on year incremental!!

At least Morrissey is original!

Haha.. Nice one Slum, Got to say, the reformation of the commotions is happening. I had this from the Lloyd Cole mailing list..

"October 'surprise' concerts will be announced
right now. Keep your ears to the ground, ther
while I'm on tour (away from this computer)..."

He mentioned Shepherds Bush, (or might have been Hammersmith) at his solo gig for the london Commotions date..

Reading Simone de Bouvoir..

Oh well you can't slag Jake Burns too much, he is one of the good guys after all, and he does have a great voice, although it sounds rough as f*** on the 'Nobodys Heroes' album.

The bravest gig I ever saw was SLF back in 78. They came on and played 'alternative ulster' and 'suspect device' as the FIRST two songs of the night.
As they were the two songs that had recently got them noticed, it would have been all too easy (and the norm) to save them for the end or the inevitable encore.
I remember turning to one of my fellow inner-city urban punk pals and saying,
"By gosh!! That's a jolly unusual tactic to employ with a setlist. I just hope it doesn't bloody well backfire on the bounders!"

well, alright, I didn't say it like that, but this is a family board, right?

Nowadays they usually start of with the recentish material and finish with the classics, playing it safe in their old age.

Do you remember a band called The Flys ? They had tracks such as Wakiki Beach Refugees, Love & a molotov cocktail, and Name Dropping. They were from Coventry and toured with the likes of The Buzzcocks and The Ruts throughout 78/79.

I always get blank looks when I namecheck them, I went into my local record/CD shop today to enquire about the CD reissues of the first 2 albums, 'Wakiki Beach Refugees' and 'Flys own', which have recently been put out and I got another blank glare in response.

Have you got any memories of them ?

Re: Stiff Little Fingers

My first gig was SLF at The Rainbow,Finsbury Park. A top night.

Respect to John Mohan a fellow music enthusiast at Douay Martyrs Comprehensive RC. John very kindly parted with his copy of 'Inflammable Material'. In those far off days one would have to schlep all the way into London from the 'burbs for "exotic" records.

For me at that time SLF were punk. Socially motivated anger merchants at 1000mph. Their other albums were shit.

The songs on the second album 'Nobodys Heroes' are good, but they get lost in the mix, as I said Jakes voice is rough on this album. But great versions of 'Fly The Flag', 'Nobodys Heroes', 'Doesn't make it alright', 'I Don't Like You' etc can be found on the peel sessions album, ah the ever essential peel sessions.

The third and fourth albums before their initial split are really crap though.

Used to have a fully signed copy of 'Inflammable Material', sold it for £30, the sleeve was in average condition, otherwise I could have got more for it.

>Thanks to Ruffian and Slum mum for their comments. I didn't hear all of his remarks due to being near the back directly in the way of "the Great Trek to the Bar!" he did say something about one song being written while he was in detox around about the time of Woodstock. Also he made some crack about "Undressed" not being the best idea of a song to write when you're getting married!
