Now, that's interesting. Judging by the musical 'achievements' of the groups he was in, the compilation should consist entirely of The Smiths tunes. Oh well...

Not really, I disgaree. The Housemartins were influenced by soul - Curtis, Al Green, Islays etc etc. They were a bit jangly and shared same fan base but no way were The Housemartins a Smiths rip-off. They were Humberside Marxists who believed in Jesus, The Smiths were Lancashire Rad-Veg Anarchists who believed in Wilde.

TAKE MARX! TAKE JESUS! TAKE HOPE! (remember?)

I'm not saying The Housemartins were the Smiths rip-off. Ok, actually I am saying this They sounded VERY jangly and frankly, hearing any of The Housemartins tunes it's like hearing Smiths cover band. Very good one but only cover band, sorry. The Smiths influence goes even as far as that sort of anti-fashionable fasion sense (the only difference being that The Smiths clearly had better taste). And soul influenced everybody - even The Smiths, so that's not a very strong argument.
Marxists? maybe, they were never too bright (they somehow failed to notice that Marxism and hope rarely go together).
