Default Another Example of a Horrible Cover......

Since there's been a discussion on this board about horrible covers of Smiths songs, I'd like to say that the most horrible cover of a song I've ever heard was not a song by the Smiths, but by New Order.
Y'all know what I'm talking about, don't ya? That horrible version of "Blue Monday" by the horrible band Orgy???? That is the worst insult to a classic song i have EVER heard in my life!!!!!! Upon hearing it, it made me angry and nauseous at the same time!!! Oh, and i don't know if this is coincidental or not, but i understand that this band is played a lot on MTV. GO FIGURE!!!!! It just really pisses me off because the only reason this band is getting any recognition is due to the fact that their debut single is a song originally done by another band; it's even landed them an article in Rolling Stone, for chrissake!!! Not that that gives anyone credibility, either. Rolling Stone is pretty sorry.
Well, there's my ranting for the day...I fell SO much better!
Oh, has anyone ever heard of a band called the Armageddon Dildos? They came out with a single of a remake of "Everyday is Like Sunday" a few years ago. It was pretty bad but not as bad as that Orgy song. I bought it, but i ended up selling it anyway. It was just too horrible sounding!

Hey Spin: the Orgy song is not as bad as some, like that damn Placebo tune the radio stations keep playing over and over! I actually thought "Blue Monday" was a new New Order version! I guess I am just too old; I remember when music was just that! Very little of what comes out today I consider music. I long for the days of Roxy Music and other new-wave-predecessor bands!

    story about blue monday...
other day we had an extremely nice day here in dreary Ohio...my friend and I were driving around in my car with the sun roof down and just listening to music....put in new order and finally got to the song blue monday.....he couldn't believe that Orgy covered the song. He thought it was there's made me want to puke....he did agree with me that after hereing the original song that orgy butchered it though....I wonder how many other misguided people out there thinks it is an original "orgy" song...hmmmm..well I wonder

You thought it was a new New Order version??? C'mon Mike! The quality of New Order's music hasn't deteriorated THAT much!
I guess I am just biased 'cause i grew up listening to New Order and the like and just think Orgy's version of "Blue Monday" is so sorry and half assed and totally cheesy!!!! They have no originality whatsoever. Not only do they cover another artist's song as a debut single, but they don't even HAVE an original sound! They're Nine Inch Nails wannabies!!!!
The only exception of a decent debut single covering a New Order song is "Bizarre Love Triangle" by the Australian band Frente. At least they have their own sound, and are quite good, by the way; you should give them a listen...
But anyway....old new wave bands, huh? Do you like Wall of Voodoo??

I really do like Everclear even if they are a bit played out on the radio, I like their sound. However they do a cover of How Soon Is Now that makes me grind my teeth. It doesn't even sound like the original, just like a regular Everclear song with a bunch of those signature "yeah"'s. I guess that in life we can be thankful for a few thigns like that song not topping the charts and being played on the radio and subsequently being credited to Everclear.

I used to LOVE Wall of DooDoo! And, point well-taken about Orgy. They do sound like NIN! Have heard a couple of Frente cuts, I like them!

Yeah, that really sucks that they couldn't even debut with a real song from their catalogue. Maybe record labels are doing with indie bands what they had been doing with dance and R&B artists: they get them one song to play, cash in on it, and dump them afterwards remaining the no names they started out as. Like that woman who covered a dance version of total Eclipse of the Heart" a few years ago, they will be gone tomorrow.

I mean, there are hundreds of other bands that could easily play that song, and who wants to go through the hassle of actually trying to get people to like new stuff?

What's funny about this band is that they were interviewed by MTV (Thay obvioulsy struck a deal with the devil) and stated:

"We just want to do something that is original."

    Good luck!

    Default Worst of all.....

Orgy is associated with that other friggin' band I wish somebody would off, KORN! EEWWWWWW! What a surprise, huh? 2 crappy bands that are friends and 2 that MTV just love to promote. Another example of MTV's decline.
Speaking of covers, the best cover I ever heard was the Sundays' version of the Stones' "Wild Horses." I mean, Harriet Wheeler's gorgeous voice just adds to that song, sounds better than the original. Second place goes to Jeff Buckley and his haunting and beautiful version of this guy's song, last name Cohen, called "Hallelujah." Another good cover I heard recently is the Cranberries' version of Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way." Tres Bien! Never heard a good cover of a Morrissey/Smiths' song. Nobody can compare to Moz/Smiths! Nobody!¿ Everclear is in concert here in Denver tomorrow 2/20 at Mammoth¿ Events Toilet!

Bowie's "I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday" isn't too bad...and YES! I agree with your opinion about the Sundays' "Wild Horses", it's brilliant!

Ok, the best cover I have evr heard is The ocean Blue doing There is a Light. It is super beautiful and though not better than the original awsome in it's own right.

I think its great, but it's a different tone. It has a cool Chicago blues sound, but I question if the song was meant to be played that way. Kind of like all the cock-rock metal bands that cover "Anarchy in the UK" and speed up the tempo.

Harriet Wheeler is one the greatest voices I've ever heard. Obviously, she could get away with that song; Jagger's voice is hardly competition for her. The timbre of her voice is very accurate, and it's a wonder why she's so underrated. Guitarist David Gavurin [albeit wrongfully accused of being a Marr or Robin Guthrie copycat] gave the song the perfect atmosphere. It's just a sad injustice that the world only saw the song fit to be on a BEER COMMERCIAL.

    Default A not-so-bad cover

Who did the cover of "Sweet Jane," by the Velvet Underground - was it the Cowboy Junkies? I liked that a lot....

Also, of course no one's going to do justice to any Smiths songs, but I quite liked Carter USM's version of "Panic" - they captured the whole angst theme (whereas Morrissey chooses to understate it by his swoony singing).

How bout Billy Bragg's version of "Never Had . . ."? Or his version of "Jeanne," which I've never heard but which fits his ouvre perfectly.

    Default Unfortunately...

    > Who did the cover of "Sweet Jane," by the Velvet¿ Underground - was it the Cowboy Junkies? I liked that a lot....

That's probably the Cowboy Junkies most recognized song. That's really bad for them because they are not a good band. How can the Junkies get any respect?
The Sundays are known best for "Here's Where The Story Ends" and "Wild Horses" because of that friggin' bud commercial from way back. That's also unfortunate because the Sundays are 10 times more talented than the Cowboy Junkies. Like Mani said, the Sundays get no respect, but the few fans they have, including me, love 'em to death. How can you not get entranced by the beautiful, plus beautiful voice of Harriet Wheeler? Look at that band Sixpence None The Richer, everyone in the media say they sound like the Sundays and they're getting more press and record sales than the Sundays, which sucks! What's wrong with this picture? And please don't get me started with that lead singer, Leigh Nash I believe, Harriet's singing voice destroys hers by 20 fold. Did anyone see the Sixpence chick struggle on Donnie & Marie? YECK!¿ Also, of course no one's going to do justice to any Smiths¿ songs, but I quite liked Carter USM's version of¿ "Panic" - they captured the whole angst theme (whereas¿ Morrissey chooses to understate it by his swoony singing).

Someone mentioned the Ocean Blue's version of "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out," that's a good one, too.

Whoever said Gavurin is a Robin Guthrie or Marr ripoff should be shot. Whoever made those assumptions probably based this smear campaign on the fact that the Sundays were influenced by the Smiths and the Cocteau Twins. JEEEZ, Harriet and David are friends with Robin and Elizabeth Fraser in real life! Can you actually compare David's guitaring to anything Robin did in Cocteau Twins' songs such as "The Spangle Maker?" I don't think so. Man, what a great list of bands described here, The Smiths, The Sundays and The Cocteau Twins. I love it, hee, hee!

Heh-heh - reminds me: I saw Sixpence last November. They opened up for none other than Duran Duran's John Taylor (and his band, "Terroristen"). Hey, it was a childhood fantasy to see John ..so sue me! Anyway, Sixpence did a cover of "There She Goes," by the La's.
