Why "That's Entertainment"?

The Jam were such an amazing band with so many great songs. Of all to choose from, why did Morrissey pick "That's Entertainment" to cover? I've never understood that.

I've always felt "Carnation" from "The Gift" would have suited Morrissey so much more... in terms of lyrical subject matter & infinitely more emotive music.

What songs would you like to hear Morrissey cover?

Whilst I agree with your sentiment, That's Entertainment is still a great song & I especially like Morrisseys lyric changes & the steam train sound affect (shades of 60's Northern England, maybe?) which opposes the 70's London tube sounds of 'Down in the tubestation at midnight' another song which whilst you could argue runs along a few of Morrisseys themes, violence, right wing nutters & London but it wouldn't run with Morrisseys ambiguous relationships, so I don't think he would cover 'DITTAM', but seems like a good idea for a poll?

P.S. My choice of cover would be... The Buzzcocks 'Ever fallen in love...'

I liked Fine Young Cannibals cover of that song, can't really imagine a Morrissey version.

Re: What songs would you like to hear Morrissey cover?

Ugh, did you? I didn't like it when it was released and about a year after I first heard it, I discovered it was a cover. Heard The Buzzcock's version and loved it.

Are you biased because there is a Beat connection to FYC?

No I genuinely like Roland Gifts voice, although most FYC material is pretty mediocre.

Ruts DC

Hey Radar.. took your advice and managed to find a copy of Ruts DC and Zion (?? or something) track 'Teengae Dub'.. Excellent stuff.. Really my kind of dub.. Any others I should check out?

If you like that stuff, find the Black Uhuru album featuring the tracks 'Natural Reggae Beat', 'General penitentary', 'Guess Who's Coming to Dinner', 'Abortion'.. Sly and Robbie at their dub best.. the bass lines are excellent. Especially on the first track.

Do you know any other bands that turned out stiuff like Uhuru and 'Teenage Dub'..? I must be a little black inside somewhere!

Zion Train/Ruts DC - teenage dub. I'm not familiar with this track of the top of my head, I will have to check through my Zion Train/Ruts DC remixes when I get home. I know its not from Rythem Collision so it must be a fairly recent track as Zion Train started remixing Ruts DC stuff from about 93 onwards.

Yeah Shaun, I'm up for it, if I'm not working!
I'll be in touch asap!

This track is on my Zion Train radio sessions tape which I recorded in about 96 of the John Peel show, it was Dave Ruffy and Segs who collaborated with them on this track, I've never heard the original though.

There is no better place to start with the UK dub scene then Zion Train, Homegrown Fantasy is probebly the best starting point. And also keep an eye out for more Ruts DC stuff.

Grim,

Take a listen to "Heir Apparent" to spot what almost certainly has to be a clever allusion to "Down in the Tube Station..."

Weller: I pulled out the Queen/Smiling, beguiling

Morrissey: You were there/Departing, starting

Gleaming & leaving

This would be a most arch reference, even by Morrissey standards. But I think the dual settings in train stations are strong evidence for it.

The Jam song is a cracker in its own right.

Cheers,

Jamie

yes, and i wonder who morrissey is addressing in this song? is it the up and coming bands such as the smoking popes and gene (remember this was '97 when this was written and with no crystal ball)? or is he less interested in who the heir is, and is more interested in documenting how he feels at this point in his career?

Re: What songs would you like to hear Morrissey cover?

This is a great thread. The only problem I see with the poll question of "which song should Moz cover?" is that 100 people will likely have nearly as many opinions. I love "Down in The Tubestation at Midnight," have brought it up in several posts along with "Eton Rifles," and "Strange Town." Of all these Jam songs, I would like Moz to cover "Strange Town."

Found myself in a strange town
though I've only been here for 3 weeks now
I've got blisters on my feet
trying to find a friend in Oxford Street
bought an A-Z guidebook
trying to find the clubs & YMCAs
but when you ask in a strange town
they say, don't know, don't care, and I gotta go mate

Re: Down in the Tube Station Alluded to in "Heir Apparent"

Ah, but Morrissey does so love his half-rhymes! Yes, I can't remember who the pop star in question is supposed to be. I suppose the song is about the contrast between the "heir" being on the up and Morrissey being on the down. It could be M Rossiter, I suppose, but as the station is most likely to be Piccadilly then a Mancunian candidate might be more likely... any ideas?

Re: Down in the Tube Station Alluded to in "Heir Apparent"

Morrissey seems to shout a name in the middle of the song which sounds to me like "Graham" am I right or horribly wrong??

Re: What songs would you like to hear Morrissey cover?

I'd like to hear him have a go at Violin by Kate Bush

VVVIIIIIIIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLINNNN.
