Okay, if you were going to buy a DM record for the first time, which one would you buy? Black Celebration? Everyone seems to like that one.

The Singles 86
VIOLATOR
> The Singles 86 What do you mean you hate Morrissey's guts?!?
you suck.morrissey's the best, punk
"catching up with" is the best
I have almost all of DM's albums, and "Black Celebration" is my favorite. I think "Black Celebration" is a masterpiece, but I don't know if it would be a good first album to get. If you're looking for a good first studio album, "Violator" is great and has a lot of well known songs like "personal jesus" "enjoy the silence" and "policy of truth". Or go for the singles 86-98, which I think is 2 CD's and is a ton of good songs. For live stuff "101" is awesome. I would probably go for any of those before you buy some of the older stuff like "catching up with DM" or the singles 81-85 or any of their first albums like "broken frame" or "speak and spell". And I would agree that Morrissey rules and I would get one of his albums or the smiths before delving into the world of DM.

Some Great Reward, Catching Up With Depeche Mode, or Black Celebration.
Definitely VIOLATOR or THE SINGLES 86-98

>Interesting that I seem to be the only one who has a clue about Depeche Mode...In the saga of this great band, there are three peaks, with various plateaus and valleys interspersed along the way. These three apogees are Some Great Reward, Violator and Ultra. Now, though they are the best examples of their album work, they are not necessarily equal, purely the standouts of their career. It would be too difficult to decide which of the three is the best, and we'd have to get into questions of songwriting, lyric writing, simple genius, complex genius, maturity, innocence, etc., and in the end it might just have to be chalked up to personal taste or what day of the week it is. My advice: don't cheat yourself with a singles collection. You will learn very little about Depeche Mode that way.
What do you mean you hate Morrissey's guts?!?
At 2 am he seems like an unforgivable, loathsome bitch and a complete impostor who deserves NONE of the success that life has so casually dropped in his lap. God knows why I have all his records.

You're weird. I don't know if your stupid or just trying to get a reaction out of people. Do you like it when people don't like you?
Yeah, You're weird....
thats right sonny
Saying that "Ultra" is better than "Black Celebration" or "Music for the Masses" is like saying that "Maladjusted" is better than "Vauxhall and I" or "Viva Hate." "Ultra" is the one DM album that I regret having bought. I was very excited about it before it was released, and then I got it on the day it came out, and I was disappointed that I enjoy only 3 or 4 songs on the entire album. In contrast, I can listen to "Black Celebration" time and time again and feel like it is one of the few albums that I have ever heard on which each song works and feels like it belongs, and each song builds on the next until you reach the epiphany in the form of "But Not Tonight." I agree that a singles collection would deprive the listener of the finely tuned machine that is a great Depeche Mode album, but the original question was "what would be a good first DM album to get?," and I think that "Ultra" would be the worst possible choice. But everyone is entitled to an opinion, and I mean no disrespect to you and your interpretation of the music of DM.
Are you retarded or something? There's always a few like you in every fan base. The newest album you don't like but years from now you love it. Yeah, Ultra isn't a good place to start but it's a kick-ass album. Songs like Insight, Sister of Night, the Bottom Line, etc. get inside you like nothing else. The same goes for Maladjusted. Trouble Loves Me, Alma, Ambitious Outsiders, yeah yeah the album is awesome OK. And you don't need to go comparing it to the artist's other work to judge it. I just don't understand how pricks like you work or why you would even hang around here.
I mean no disrespect. I think.
Did you just get out of philosophy class or something? 3 peaks? Various various plateaus and valleys? That's ridiculous. You can't sit and analyze a musical output like that. Especially one as rich and consistantly meaningful as DM's.
