I was at Wembley Arena in 1991 I think ? It wasn't great as we were stuck up in the heavens and there was some sort of tube strike on.

At the gig we met up with a couple of students from Southampton(Nadine was one) and we went back to a party at one of their parents place in Kenton.

We ended up missing the last train home and slept in a huge, mechanical digger that was parked outside South Kenton tube station.

We were wakened next morning by a very understanding policeman and caught the 1st tube on the Sunday morning back into Kings Cross and the onwards to Cambridge.

We were all supposed to meet up again a few months later to see Moz in Kilburn but I was a bit "unwell" at the time and although I did attend the gig it wasn't the best night for me.

I have really fond memories of that weekend. It was lovely and hot and Moz seemed to be on the brink of great things although part of me felt we were losing him as he seemed to be embracing stadia instead of the small and frantic gigs we had loved as part of The Smiths.

I've not really answered your question but I know he also played Wembley supporting Bowie in 1995 ? I have a video of this gig and it is absolutely amazing. The best I have ever heard the band.

When Moz departs the stage there is a crescendo of wailing feedback which goes on for some minutes as Alain brings the set to an end.

At least 3 times - Kill Uncle 1991, Outsiders(Bowie tour)1995, Maladjusted 1997. I think that's it.

Nice story/memories... I've never slept in a digger! Worst I've done is on benches at Charing Cross, or on buses!

I always avoided Wembley Arena.. Too big, sound bounces round in the heavens.. and it's impersonal. The best gig there for me was Blur about 1995. I did see the phenonemon of Baddiel&Newman doing their two man standup there as well.. Quite close to the stage. When Comedy was the new rock n'roll for a season.

So what is his biggest gig though? Barrowlands sounds massive ..! is it?

Ruffian

I think Barrowlands is 2,500 Ruff but I might be wrong. It has been known . There are no seats just one big floor.

I lost my shoe there at a Bunnymen gig once. Had to hobble home via public transport on a bitterly cold night.

Still,it kept everyone else amused.

I also slipped in the toilets there at an EBTG gig and got 3 stitches above my eye

That was back in the days when EBTG were a very good band...

Did Moz play Wembley in 1997 ? I remember Battersea but not Wembley.

I Might Be Wrong

Kill Uncle - definite, it's in the 'Smiths and Beyond' book.
Outsiders tour - definite.

Now, I think he played it once more. Because in Will Self's book 'Feeding Frenzy' ( a collection of his articles) there is a Morrissey interview. And in that he talks about watching Morrissey at Wembley Arena a few days after he interviewed Morrissey. I haven't got the book with me so I can't check the date, unfortunately. He talks about the cover of Southpaw grammar and asks Morrissey about boxing, so it's not Kill Uncle. It could be that Will Self went to see the Outsiders show.. I just had this idea about him playing it on the Maladjusted Tour, if you're pretty sure he didn't, then it couldn't have been then.

I wouldn't take it as gospel but I remember starting my new job in London towards the end of 1997 and being unable to get to the gig at Battersea Power Station a few months later.

I am hopeless on years though but my memory must be shot to pieces if he did play Wembley that year as I have no recollection of it

Where's Bluenose when you need her

I can't recall any venues for that tour as I only saw him at Battersea, which was December '97.

I'm still right here, where I always was. Although I haven't been much use on this thread

Hey J. Where Are You Going With Those Statistics In Your Hand?

Thanks.

J:

In those shows did he play to Wembley's capacity of nearly 70,000 people?

Re: Hey J. Where Are You Going With Those Statistics In Your Hand?

Wembley Arena is not Wembley Stadium!! Wembley holds around 10 000.

Re: Hey J. Where Are You Going With Those Statistics In Your Hand?

Thanks. I suspected as much.

Did he ever play the Stadium, even as support for Bowie?

5 times

One on the Kill Uncle Tour
4 Nights on the David Bowie tour

it was one of the David Bowie shows that was commented on by Will Self.
