Hmmm...don't agree with all of your choices, but there has been enough bickering on here of late so I won't publicly slag them off. Apart from The Smiths, may I add

    The Specials

    London 0 Hull 4 - The Housemartins

    The Stone Roses

High Land Hard Rain - Aztec Camera

    Desperate Character - Kirsty MacColl

The Kick Inside - Kate Bush

    The Undertones

    Squeeze

That's all I can think of at the moment.

The early stuff by UB40 is good, but they quickly became sort of pop reggae.

Can't believe I forgot Velvet Underground & Nico.

Too many of you pesky kids have already mentioned my choices. Okay, what's left?

Orange Juice - you can't hide your love forever.
Siouxsie & The Banshees - the scream.
The Rezillos - can't stand the rezillos.
    Weezer - weezer.
The Fall - live at the witch trials.
    Roxy Music - roxy music.
The Pogues - red roses for me.
Idlewild - captain (mini-album). hope is important (full debut). Either one.

That's all for now. Mentally exhausted. Going for a lie-down.

You're right about UB40. Their early singles were similar in their anti-Thatcher message to their contempories like The Specials and The Beat. It is a pity they became lazy and just released old reggae covers.

I wouldn't have had you down as a fan of Weezer, Paddy. Good album, but haven't liked much of what they have done since.

The first UB40 album is brilliant. I know it's hard to believe.

Well, that's almost identical to me, Bluebles. Except I haven't even heard their follow-up stuff.
    I had a wee spurt (oo-err) of let's-see-if-I-can-delay-the-onset-of-middle-age in the mid-90's.
So I got to like Weezer, Pulp, Gene, and.. erm...that's it.
Weezer - loved their debut album but didn't follow up. Simply couldn't be arsed.
Pulp - loved 'his 'n' hers' and followed them through to the majestic 'we love life'. One of my all-time favourite bands, with The Velvets, 72-75 Roxy Music (whom all the kids here would be gushing about if Morrissey had said he liked them), loads of punk bands, and The Smiths.
Gene - loved 'olympian' (great choice Bluebles). Loved 'drawn to the deep end'. But then just gave up . Like with Weezer, I don't know why.
So if my readers from Weezer and Gene are reading this - it was nothing you guys did, it was me.

Don't tell me there is another similarity!

I heard a few tracks off 'Pinkerton', which was the 2nd Weezer album i think, but wasn't that bothered about them. I remember they had a long break becuase the singer had an operation on his leg becuase one was longer than the other! Another Bluenose useless fact, there.

Didn't realise you held Pulp in such high esteem. I bought 'A Different Class', but was a bit diasappointed with the track on it. I love the sleeve design though. The vinyl (naturally) had interchangable cards so you can create your own cover. For me, their best stuff was 'Intro' and 'His 'n' Hers'.

I think Gene are a fabulous band. I have seen them live several times. Fantastic. There was a danger of them being overshadowed by the comparisons that were made between them and The Smiths, but personally, I don't think they are as alike as the NME et al made out.

Aye, I know they took a break. Didn't one of them form a band called The Rentals? Maybe not. Something like that though. I know the main man had a pretentious name. Rivers, or something. I just gave up. By that time the march of middle age was irresistable

    > Didn't realise you held Pulp in such high esteem.

I do. They're up there with the best ever.

The darker stuff of 'this is hardcore' is criminally under-rated. From 'party hard'
    - 'I was having a whale of a time,

    until your uncle psychosis arrived.'
    That's different...erm..class.

    > I think Gene are a fabulous band. I have seen them live several times.

Superb. Saw them twice at the Barrowlands. Almost exactly a year apart. Jan 96 and Jan 97. I'm good at dates when there's other. erm.. things going on.

    Nope, me neither.
Now stop this, Bluebles. I'm getting scared.
