    Default Dexys are back Baby!!!

After an absence of at least 12 years Dexys Midnight Runners release their new single "Manhood" on Monday 29th September 2003. The lyrics are confessional and are surrounded by the catchiest tune around. It blows away anything else around at the moment. If any of the songs on Morrissey's new album are half as good as this then I'll be happy....

Their Best of "Let's Keep This Precious" was released yesterday. I think there are at least 2 new songs on it including "Manhood"

Gong to see them in Glasgow in early November. Should be brilliant.

"This Is What She's Like" is one of the greatest songs I have ever heard.

    Poor old Jonny Ray
    Sounded sad upon the radio
He moved a million hearts in mono
Our mothers moved sing along, who would blame them
Now you're grown (so grown up)
So grown (so grown up) now I must say more than ever
Toora loora torra loo rye aye
And we can sing just like our fathers
Come on Eileen, Oh I swear (what he means)
At this moment, you mean everything
With you in that dress, oh my thoughts I confess
    Verge on dirty
    Ah come on Eileen
    These people 'round here
With their beat down eyes sunk in smoke dried faces
They're resigned to what their fate is
But not us, (no never) no not us (no never)
We are far to young and clever
    Come on Eileen
Toora loora toora loo rye aye
I've been on this toon forever
Come on Eileen well I swear (what he means)
Ah come on lets take off everything
That pretty red dress, oh Eileen (tell him yes)
Ah come on lets, ah come on Eileen
Come on Eileen toora ta loo rye aye
Come on Eleen toora ta loo rye aye
    Torra torra ta loo rye
    Oh Eileen
    I said come on Eileen
    Oh come on Eileen
We are far to young and clever, and things wont ever change
    I said
Toora loora toora loo rye aye
    Sung in backround
Come on Eileen toora ta loo rye aye
Come on Eleen toora ta loo rye aye
    Torra torra ta loo rye
Come on Eileen oh I swear (what he means)
At this moment you mean everything to me
    Oh to me, Oh Eileen
    You mean everything

    funny lyrics indeed -

"I must say more than ever: Toora loora torra loo rye aye"

"At this moment, you mean everything" (I don't know about later on, after sex)

It is such a shame that people only know Dexy's for this one song. Try listening to the first album 'Searching For The Young Soul Rebels'. There are some blinding tracks on there such as 'Tell Me When My Light Turns Green', 'Burn It Down', 'Keep It' and 'There There My Dear'

Nothing too flamboyant. He was in last months "Word" magazine and looke pretty tame in a suit.
He lost the plot big time for about 10 years and was/is a cocaine addict.

He was squatting for about 2 years in London. Now living the quiet life in Brighton.

    Default One Hit Wonder?

In the Colonies, I'm fairly certain they are considered a one hit wonder, like Right Said Fred (I'm too sexy...). Are you saying this is erroneus? This is not intended as a joke or to be insulting. I only know the song for which they are most famous.

I agree, Bluenose. It's a real shame that they're known only for Come On Eileen. Searching for the Young Soul Rebels is a tremendous, brilliant and unique album, with a huge soul influence. They're inspiring. Kevin Rowland is a genius. I'm seeing them in Dublin in November and can't wait.

I think it's been mentioned here before, but 'Don't Stand Me Down' is also brilliant, and criminally underrated.

Don't Stand Me Down is the best of their 3 studio albums in my opinion, there are some seriously heart rendering songs on that album.

What?? wasn't 'Deeply Dippy' by the Freds a hit where you are? Check it out Piranha. It's brilliant. I'd say it was even better than ' I'm too sexy....'.
Controversial opinion , maybe, but I stand by it.

That was a soppy drippy sit com Grim. Every Sunday night I had to watch it because my mum liked it. What's your excuse

"Don't Stand Me Down" is only underrated by the good folk on here. Elsewhere it is recognised as their best ever work.

Well erm, I alway thought Jacko's (if that was his name) mate Eric (Mike Walling) was the same bloke Ken (Mike Grady) from Citizen Smith, Wolfies sidekick but as I was completely wrong, I have no excuse. Yes it was like watching paint dry! harf harf!

    Grim
btw the bloke who played Jacko (Karl Howman) is doing adverts for a cleaning product now over here.

I saw him play in a club in Croydon. Why Kevin Rowland wrote a song about him I'll never know.

Did you know 'Deeply Dippy' was covered by a C&W-influenced band called The Rockingbirds? Well, there you go.

I saw him at the Cambridge Folk Festival about 15 years ago and he was amazing.

    He's a Northern Soul hero.
