I was prowling through some old L.P's last night and stumbled across some albums by the Cocteau Twins.
The albums in question were :- Victorialand , Blue Bell Knoll and Treasure.
Now back in the days of The Smiths the Cocteaus were part of the staple indie diet.
Somewhere along the line I must have fallen out with them though as I can't remember buying any of their latter albums or following their career too closely.
So last night was like dipping a toes into the past and I have to say... it was wonderful
Sure their songs had stupid titles such as :-"Fluffy Tufts","Spooning Good Singing Gum" and "Aloysius".
Their covers were bleak and abstract and never listed the musicians involved or the song titles on the covers but after last night all is forgiven
The music was beautiful and Liz Fraser to this day remains unrivaled for the title of the best ever female vocalist in popular music history.Sorry Pollie.
That sentence sounds like an act of betrayal but it's true...
Perhaps I was feeling a little sentimental last night but the music invoked a stream of flooding memories to emerge, Some good...some not do good but that is life.
In many ways that trilogy of albums encapsulated my adolesence. The love, the fears, the feelings of not quite fitting in and the realisation that life was going to represent one giant roller coaster ride of emotions.
So this weekend, drag those L.P's down from the loft( they should never have been there in the first place).
Dust down your copy of "Treasure",close the curtails and sail away to the soaring sounds of The Cocteau Twins.
It will reawaken a love affair.
