Apparently, to celebrate...now it's either the 20th anniversary of his solo stuff, or 25 years since his first single release with Riff Raff, a new compilation is being planned. It's called 'Must I Paint You A Picture'
You can vote for your favourite tracks to be included on his compliation.

My faves of Billy's are

1. Greetings to The New Brunette
2. Waiting For The Great Leap Forward
3. Ontario, Quebec and Me
4. Must I Paint You A picture
5. You Woke Up My Neighbourhood

Nice one, bluey!!!!

... except you've just cost be 12 pounds, as I felt it was necessary to purchase the Riff Raff compilation while I was in there.
Capitalism is killing music.

My votes were;

Greetings to the New Brunette
Levi Stubbs' Tears
Scholarship is the Enemy of Romance
The Milkman of Human Kindness
A New England
This Guitar Says Sorry

In that order. I'm a bit old school in my ways.

Those are all nice choices 'though - I came within a breath of including "Ontario" myself.

Cheers Crushy!

Heh heh
I am toying with the idea of buying that too! I have only heard 'I Wanna Be A Cosmonaught', but that's enough for me.

Maybe a few of the Punk Wars vetrans on here could shed some light onto the other tracks (Patrick, now is your chance to shine)

I think there may be a tour to coincide too. He's doing a few festivals here in the summer, so hopefully after that...

Yeah, I'm not too keen on that Wilco stuff, either

Re: I like the Woodie Guthrie stuff but that is just me!!

He did an album called "Mermaid Avenue" it had a nice female singer on it didn't it?

I only heard Mermaid Avenue once, and I can't remember who else sang on it.
Do you like his 80s stuff?

Mermaid Avenue

Mermaid Avenue 1 is fantastic, Mermaid 2 is a big stinky peice of poo. England, Half English is not much better.

Natalie Merchant from 10,000 Maniacs sang "Birds and Ships" on Mermaid 1, that's probably who you're referring to, and she IS wonderful. She also sang on "Bread and Circuses" from the "You Woke up my Neighbourhood" single.

Are you mad PD? check out valentines day is over.. Levi Stubbs tears .. and the wonderful Wlak Away Renee with Johnny.. are worth more respect!
consider also, "How can you lay back and think of England when you don't even know who's in the team"

Another reason to give him a appreciative nod.

For Ruffian and Patrick

Can you throw any light on other Riff Raff stuff (See my post to Crushing bore)

Don't know about Ruff, B, but I can't. I was wandering a lot at that time, mentally and physically, and probably missed out on quite a lot of bands.
It was sheer luck that I caught The Smiths on one of my visits back to dear old blighty at the time.
Otherwise I might not be here now.
And that would be a terrible shame, wouldn't it?
Wouldn't it?!!???

Wouldn't it?!??!!

Well Blue.. Not sure I can recollect Riff Raff. I know its something to do with Braggs early years but that's not really a secret.. and his erstwhile mate Wiggy was involved too whom I saw with Bragg doing a duet in a quaint way at an AIDS benefit at Brixton Academy in the late 80's. Man, let me reminisce here.. we're coming out of teh Punk Wars, into teh Indie Campaign of that era.. It was a great line-up, like a mini festival, all doing 30 minutes or so each.... there was Billy Bragg, Band of the Holy Joy, James and That Petrol Emotion.. They were all superb in their own ways.. but man, 'That Petrol Emotion' rocked my world that night. Well worth the £6 or whatever it was admission.

I'll do my own 'Under the influence' soon.. might make for some interesting things for people to check out.

peace and make love..
Ruffian
