Can anybody confirm if Moz was at this performance? The gig has scored some notoriety in the movie, 24 Hour Party People. Mick Middles claims Morrissey saw the Sex Pistols in Manchester but fails to establish the date of the performance. Anybody??

He was there, but they cut this scene from the movie.'

He was there for sure. Pete Shelley confirms it.

Was he a foot soldier in the punk wars? Operation manchester Storm? When you were standing shoulder to shoulder with shelley?

Oh yeah. the worst lookalike EVER! I look more like Morrissey than that.. well, from the waste down..

The confusion around the Lesser Free Trade Hall gig is that it was repeated, they played twice over the summer of 76. Some people went to both, others the first or second. That's why a lot of people ( mainly who went to the second - more attended this ) dispute who was and wasn't in attendance.

Morrissey attended the first for sure.

Correct on all counts, ordsall.

The second one was when The Buzzcocks made their live debut, supporting the Pistols. There was a crowd of 167,000 at that one. In a hall that held about 300. At a squeeze.
This was a couple of months before the legendary two-day Punkfest at London's 100 Club, which was 20th and 21st of September, 1976.
The lesser free trade hall gigs? One in May and one in July? Something like that.

Well, I don't think Morrissey was standing shoulder to shoulder with shelley, Ruff. More hovering-around-in-the-background kind of thing. But he was there or thereabouts.
Whether he ever got involved in any bitter hand-to-hand streetfighting, I don't suppose we'll ever know.
At least, not until his autobiography is published.
I can't picture him on the front line, somehow.
Aye,*sighs and stares wistfully into the distance* we lost a lot of good men.

The correct dates for both gigs

Morrissey was definately there for the first one as he wrote a letter to the Manchester Evening News and letters also to NME and Sounds too, describing the gig.
1st gig June 4th 76
2nd gig 20th July 76
The Goat

Many thanks all. I appreciate the information.

He was there on his own,Funny thing is Mick Hucknall from Simply Red fame was also there along with Joy Division members,Tony Wilson and a few people that would help Wilson and co with Factory.

You know its funny that the movie mentioned all these other incidentary artists at the gig but not Moz. Perhaps he didn't want to be involved at all.
