Can anyone give me some good songs to check out? Preferably along the same line as to what I am listening to right now: Smiths/Moz, Manic Street Preachers, Interpol, The Music, Snow Patrol, B&S, The Thrills, Placebo, Wilco, Radiohead, Neutral Milk Hotel, Jeff Buckley, Sonic Youth, etc. So, something similar to any of these bands, but a little newer/lesser known, etc. Cool.

Don't know how similar this music is to yours but here are some of my favs.

The Beta Band - "Al Sharp", "Dry the Rain", "Quiet"

The Innocence Mission - "Follow Me", "I Have Not Seen This Day Before". This band is a bit folky / celtic sounding (which is completely not my kind of music) but they are amazing. I am so in love with this band!! If you can, try and download the full 'Birds of My Neighbourhood' album.

Toadies - "Possum Kingdom"

Catherine Wheel - "Black Metalic", "Sparks Are Gonna Fly"

The Soundtrack of Our Lives - "Sister Surround", "Mind the Gap"

The Cranes - "Jewel", "Rainbow", "Everywhere".

Chameleons - "In Shreds", "Swamp Thing"

Rufus Wainwright - "Greek Song", "Poses", "Instant Pleasure"

Tagging Satellites - "Valentino" (or anything else)

Transvision Vamp - "I Want Your Love", "Andy Warhol Is Dead"

This Mortal Coil - "Song To the Siren" (BEAUTIFUL song!!)

Sarah Slean - "Blue Parade", "St. Francis"

The New Pornographers - "Mass Romantic"

King Cobb Stealie - "Home" (GREAT song!!)

Dandy Warhols - "Godless"

Crash Vegas - "Smoke"

Chicks On Speed - "Kaltes Klares Waser"

Fad Gadget - "Lady Shave"

Evanescence - "Whisper"

Happy Downloading!

Augie March

Deserve to be far better known around the globe, although their album debuted at #1 in Oz (the only half-way decent album to have done this in recent memory - don't hold it against them).

Lyrically utterly masterful if you can work out what they're saying! Start with "There is no Such Place" or "The Hole in Your Roof" for a representative sample.

Very hard music to pigeon-hole sometimes like B&S, sometimes like Jeff Buckley, often like nothing you've ever heard before!

The Ark - It Takes A Fool to Remain Sane, Joy Surrender, Father of a Son, Tell Me This Night Is Over, Laurel Wreath, Angelheads, Cygnet to Cygnet, Beauty Is the Beast, The Most Radical Thing to Do, Echo Chamber...

Kent - If You Were Here, The King Is Dead, Music Non Stop, What It Feels Like, 747 (sv. or english), VinterNoll2 (sv.), Stanna Hos Mig (sv.), Point Blank, The One To Blame, Rollercoaster, Lifesavers, Just Like Money, Blåjeans (sv.), Jag vill inte vara rädd (sv.), Ingenting någonsin (sv.)... (sv. = in Swedish)

The Bear Quartet - f*** Your Slow Songs, Punks, Portrait Painter...

Weeping Willows - Touch Me, Blue And Alone, Echoes of Your Breath, Falling, By the River, Untouchable...

Superheroes - Kiss Kiss Kiss, So Far, Paradise of Me, Someone Else, What's Going On

Re: Augie March

I don't know the band, but I have read The Adventures of Augie March, written by my favorite author, Saul Bellow, which I'm sure this band is named after. Thanks for the suggestion. I looked at your profile and we have almost the exact same music taste so I'm sure I'll love them. Have you ever ready any Saul Bellow?

Future Bible Heroes: "Lonely Days" and "You Pretend to be the Moon"

they're really good

Re: Augie March

My my, Saul Bellow your favorite author? That's an unusual but welcome choice. What's your favorite? Mine's "Herzog" followed closely by "The Adventures Of Augie March" and "Henderson The Rain King".

Odd that someone named a band after that "Columbus of those near at hand".

I am an American, Chicago-born-- Chicago, that somber city-- and go at things as I have taught myself, free-style, and will make the record in my own way: first to knock, first admitted; sometimes an innocent knock, sometimes a not so innocent. But a man's character is his fate, says Heraclitus, and in the end there isn't any way to disguise the nature of the knocks by acoustical work on the door or gloving the knuckles.

Ah, the esteemed Jenny - your cover is revealed!

Yes, I believe the name is based on the Bellow novel. Haven't read any Saul Bellow, but I'm currently going through an American literature phase, so I'm sure I'll get around to him someday soon. (Technically Canadian, I think - but tell me there's a difference...... )
Ooooh, I'm going to get MURDERED for that!

You will love the Augies, have no doubt.

You are so nice. Yes, I've posted as hairdresser on fire for a while and decided to just use my name. You are also held in the highest esteem in my book.

I'm not mad about the Canadian/American comment. It's actually more of an insult to Canadians I think. I don't mind being lumped in with Canadians because I like them. Joni Mitchell is Canadian.

Tell you what, you read Henderson the Rain King (the book that made me fall in love with Saul Bellow and my favoirte book of all time, The Picture of Dorian Gray being second) and I'll buy the Augies CD? Okay? Then we'll trade stories. That book changed my life. It's funny, entertaining, deep and profound all at the same time.

Yeah, they are, aren't they?

Their web site says they'll be on Conan this week!

Oh, golly.
*clears lump in throat*

Yes, all the Canadians I've ever met seem particularly sensetive about this point. Funnily, when I was in the States I got used to people asking if I was English. I don't exactly have a 'Croc Hunter' broad Aussie accent, so I can understand that (but only just - no Brit could ever make the same mistake) - but to my amazement I was asked a few times if I was CANADIAN!??? Considering I can only occasionally pick the difference between a Canadian and American accent, I found that amazing.

You have a deal. The Bellow snippet which was posted somewhere else in this thread intrigued me. He seems to have a tremendous flair for the musicality of language, which is everything I think a writer should aspire to (Will Self, Irvine Welsh, TAKE NOTE).

Oh, Jen - almost forgot

You MUST start with their first album 'Sunset Studies', as their second 'Strange Bird' is really dense. They're probably about on a par, but musically speaking, the latter is probably the less accessible of the two, the sort of thing that takes a few listens before you really understand just what it's trying to achieve. 'Sunset Studies' will sucker you in instantly with its resplendant, soaring melodies.

Where are they from?

Originally from Mildura, or some country town, but are now based I think in Melbourne, Moz-stralia!
