I read the article on the front page,

When I saw the lead singer I thought he strongly resembled a Morrissey "pozer." Maybe he doesn't actually look like Moz, but he's trying to look like him.

Look at his hair. He could totally be a stunt double for Moz.

I detest NFG and their entire fanbase, and the singer's unabashed attempt to look like Morrissey perturbs me.

NFG, as i already posted a few days ago, sucks. they aren't as lame as some other bands out there now. but it's retarded to say that you're influenced by moz if the only way it comes through is in your hairstyle! hey NFG, why does your music suck so damn much when you have such good influences supposedly? i ranted on the first page as well. yay.

    That's our Mindy!
All of the little emo-teens that plague my hometown are heavy into NFG. Petulant little freaks.

okay, I've had enough of this. I simply have to ask. What is this 'emo' thing? what does it mean?

It's that emotional whiney "rock" that the kids love so much these days. It is a whole style, everyone dresses like Weezer and acts all depressive and lonely. Emo is silly nonsense.

can you give me some band names that we may have heard of over here in the old world? Please don't say weezer - I like them.

Nickleback - that kind of stuff? They sounded a bit whiney and goddam awful when I heard some of their stuff last year. God, it was so bad.

well weezer is like the prototype for all emo bands. i love weezer. i just hate a lot of their fans. other emo bands are dashboard confessional and jimmy eat world. emo bands vary in quality. (weezer=good. jimmy eat world=decent. dashboard confessional=shitty.) basically, emo is an outgrowth of punk, only poppier and with more emotional lyrics. basically, anything with guitars and pop hooks and sophomoric, high school-y lyrics counts as emo.

nickleback isn't emo. it's part of the grunge renaissance. i hate nickelback.

It's more like these guys who look like sorrow-stricken punkers and literally whine their way through songs; the bands would kind of depend on one's own interpretation of the term "emo." The punkers I know tag emo to groups like Dashboard Confessional, Saves The Day, and all that sort of rubbish. It's not necessarily about the backing music for a lot of people, it's the vocals and lyrical-themes.

Weezer are by no means emo, and I don't give an eff for who tries to tell me different. Don't you go worrying about that one!

Nickelback are not emo, they make radio-friendly piss-rock...the two are equally disturbing.

IMO, Weezer are not really emo; they're just who the emo freaks try to sound like. Weezer are too mature and interesting to be emo, even in their early days. There's something deeper in their music and lyrics than you will find in any of this emo trash.

true, but they really are the founders of so-called "geek rock," which is a lot like emo. the other emo bands are just way more babyish. i mean, dashboard confessional is a group of 30 year old guys singing about being jilted in junior high or some crap like that.

even worse is john mayer. ugh. and jack johnson and all those pussies who just play acoustic guitar and try to be jeff buckley, only without any of his talent.

True that emo sounds a lot like this "geek-rock," but I still refuse to apply the term emo to Weezer. That's just wrong, Weezer are Weezer and that is it

I agree with you here. Where are these people coming from! They pair annoyingly catchy pop hooks with generic guitar work and act like that makes them some kind of musical geniuses! They see something which works for others, and try to pull it off for themselves with devastating (to folks like you and me) results; they get more popular than the people they poorly imitate!!!!!

ugh. lately my roommate has been listening to acoustic and emo versions of eighties hits. i think i bitched about this earlier, but goddamn it's annoying. and what's even more annoying is that she didn't know they were covers! i had to play her the psycho furs "the ghost in you" to prove they did it first.

also annoying is this new fellow named jason mraz. he has this one song that just meanders over a bland guitar. there is no vocal melody or tune at all! except when he sings the line "our house in the middle of the street." sound familiar?

i also hate ben kweller, if only because he completely rips off weezer's sound.

No, emo was an outgrowth of hardcore punk. Weezer, Dashboard, Get Up Kids, etc. aren't emo...they just seemed to get called that for the same unfathomable reasons that Marilyn Manson gets called "goth" (I'll stick with my Nick Cave and Bauhaus, thankyouverymuch) and No Doubt gets called "ska", and in the process insult the genre, just like the other examples I gave.

Try listening to Rites Of Spring, At The Drive-In, Fugazi, Thursday, Sunny Day Real Estate (more indie rock, but emo-influenced), Song Of Zarathustra, just to name a few.

Jason Mraz is from my hometown, I have heard him play numerous times in a local coffee shop...he's, uh, urrrrrrrrrgh...yes, urrrrrrrrrrrrrgh. He came on the radio once, they did a whole set with him in the studio. I almost tossed the radio out the window in a fit of rage.

we were talking about mainstream emo (i.e. what is marketed to the masses as emo), but of course, you are right. at the drive in is actually very good -- too bad they broke up.

by the way, marilyn manson is an abomination unto mankind. it's too bad because marilyn himself (forgot his real name) is an exceptionally intelligent and articulate guy. i wish he could funnel his talents into something other than helping the abercrombie crowd find their pseudo-dark side.

Yeah...I've heard a band that I think a couple of them started, Sparta, but they're not nearly as good :/
