Why buy this rag and financially support the very people that called Morrissey racist then continued to use his face on the cover to sell their tripe?

Wow, that is actually a cool Top 10. I'm surprised by the lack of Beck or the Beastie Boys (2 mediocre at best music acts that music critics salivate over) tacked on there somewhere.

This is actually a Top 10 that I could sit through, and come to think of it, I actually own all ten songs.

Good to see the Smiths up there of course.. but these charts are so sadly predictable.. a real alternative top 10 would be different in my world.. Wheres Ian Browns F.E.A.R. for a start (sorry that maybe top 20)!

hey moz likes beck. didn't he wear a beck tshirt in the alma matters video - or some other uncompiled vid?

but yeah, this list is fairly decent. one complaint: i like joy division and all, but i am a bit annoyed at the placement of "love will tear us apart" at number 1. it's just a personal thing though. fab song, just not really fun (or important, in my opinion) enough to be the best single ever. i'm just being nitpicky though. i'm probably just bitter that the smiths arent at no. 1.

I don't know, I think Moz's taste has went to shit. I love the Dolls and the same punk type stuff that Moz does, but I can't stand half of the stuff Moz likes now: Beck, Apex Theory, Smoking Popes (not bad, but still), etc...

Also, "Love will.." is like "How Soon is Now", "Bela Lugosi's Dead" and "Tainted love", the signature song, the one they always play, the one that even though the artist has dozens of great songs, it's the one they always mention. So yeah, that's annoying.

Also, it's been years since I've listened to Massive Attack, but it's around here somewhere

yeah, i dunno about you, but my favourite joy division song is "atmosphere" and this is blasphemous, but i really do prefer new order to joy division. although, i must say, ian curtis was just as babely as bernard sumner, if not more so - not that such things have any bearing on one's music.

i like some of beck's stuff. i think he is overhyped to an extent and has a severe case of beatles disease - that is, having one's ass kissed so much that one writes ridiculous nonsense songs because one can, knowing full well that people will still praise it. (radiohead also has this syndrome.)

moz likes the smoking popes coz they used to sound like him.

does anyone else think it funny that moz likes aha but doesnt like pulp, for example? i mean, i love aha. it's just funny to me. but i guess having people say you're like jarvis cocker's dad could get to a person (especially since jarvis is only 4 years younger than morrissey. yes, folks, it's true. jarvis was born in 1963 - moz in 1959).

Ian Curtis- babely? I dunno about that. It is quite blasphemous to prefer Neew order to the Divs, but to each thier own, I guess. I do like New order alot, but Joy Div are unbelievable.

Good call. I don't really care, but Beck is like Radiohead or Ryan Adams, he seems to get crammed down our throats. (I do like Rhead, but still)

    > moz likes the smoking popes coz they used to sound like him.

Yeah, I think so. I love 'Need you Around' because it sounds like Moz fronting some punk band, but that's about the only song of theirs I like.

Moz likes aha? No way! I was surprised when Moz made those comments about Jarvis. Jealousy, methinks.

I remember a couple years ago, this band Ultrasound was supposed to be the next thing, and some mag was making a big deal that their singer, Jarvis, and Fatboy Slim were the hippest cats around, and they all were in the neighborhood of 40.

This is the top 10 they chose back in 1987

    2. Tired of being alone - Al Green
    3. Walk on by - Dionne Warwick
    4. Kiss - Prince
5.This old heart of mine - The Isley Brothers
6.(Get up I feel like being a) Sex machine - James Brown
7.King Tubby meets the rockers uptown - Augustus Pablo
8.Young hearts run free - Candi Staton

This Charming Man snuck in at 22. Joy Division could only manage 26, but it was with Atmosphere, not Love Will...

Don't you think it's blasphemous to call Joy Division "the Divs"!

Beck is dull. He's knocked out a few good numbers but I doubt they'd make up an entire album if put together. Radiohead, however, haven't put a foot wrong. They are magical and clearly one of the strongest bands from the last decade.

This Charming Man is so NOT the best of the Smiths single releases. Bigmouth..., That Joke Isn't Funny..., Last Night I Dreamt... are far superior songs.

I agree. I love Radiohead. But pity to whoever doesn't like them. Thom goes to the bathroom, and some magazine is there to cover it.

You are so damned right! F.E.A.R. should be at least the second song if not the first for it Fucking Explains Almost.. Ruffian, I could not find the R word , sorry I used your nickname. Ian Brown is great although he is not widely(precisely,at all)known here in Russia. As for the top 10 list, I do agree. I don/t really like Kurt Kobein's roaring in"Smells.." "Come as you are" is much better to my taste, or can I say so,wiser song? Thank you for attention.

    Default F.E.A.R.

...I thought I was the only person who thinks this is one of the greatest (and cleverest) songs ever written. It's a shame he's such a prick.... it takes the 'edge' off him, for me.... great video, too.

This Charming Man is the track people are 'supposed' to like by the Smiths, along with How Soon is Now.

Give me Bigmouth, I Started something, What difference, Handsome Devil and There is a light any day.....

    Hello there!
Morrissey is of course not popular in Russia. Russian listen to shit like r'n'b and a lot of russian pop crap.
Still the Smiths have caused a lot of influence on russian rock bands. The most popular were DM and the Cure . Iguess more people know mr.Smith in russia than in England.
The most influental was Joy Division. Still Russian rock scene is a very specific one. Here in St.Petersburg where I happen to live a lot of mid-30's musicians know and respect the Smiths and all of us were ready to go Moscow where Moz was said to have a gig in late October.
OOps, he never came. I was in a band "Aelita and Los' " and we had this song "OVER AND OUT". The lyrics were influenced by my favourite "I'd love to" which is brilliant. Still the song sounds more Neworderish. Its the only one in English. And if you have five minutes
to spare then I'll tell you the address of this site.

    http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/268/aelita_and_los.html

    Thank you.

Have you heard the traditional song "Morrissey and The Russian Sailor" ? It's not about Steven Patrick of course (actually there's a related song called "Morrissey And The Black" (sic) which is well dodgy by contemporary standards) - but it used to produce much giggling among my Smithophobic classmates.

So what, everyone has all those. The list is totally arbitrary.

And Beck and the Beasties are cool.
