Morrissey serious stomach condition (in his childhood)

I remembered the following quote when I read in Moz' book that he nearly died as a child. Does someone know from which year this quote is? Could it be that this condition affected him his whole life one way or another? I think there is another quote out there from a musician or engineer (I can't remember) which says something about Moz' digestive system. Does someone remember? Do you think these conditions are related?

What was your worst illness?
When I was three I had to go into hospital with a serious stomach condition. They cut me up and sewed me back together again. I was a mass of stitches.

Had his appendix out at Davyhulme hospital, I think.
