Morrissey - A hug when the center doesn't meet

There is this part in Autobiography which always reminds me of those awkward hugs of Morrissey when he looks like it's the first ever hug he gets. There was a time when I thought that awkwardness was a thing oft yesteryear but when you see that footage from the Staples Center where Patti Smith hugs Moz or the scene where Russell Brand kisses him then you realise it's still there which is quite odd when you think about it. So here is the snippet

[…] therefore a hug when the center doesn't meet is a hug with fear […]

Is he talking about himself here? (I personally feel that this whole passage about Kirk Douglas is as much a reflection on the actor as on Moz himself)
