Well, 2014 has been a pretty horrendous year in a lot of ways, but it's ending on a very hopeful note—and for that, I am grateful. I am cautiously optimistic about 2015.

Most of us read things into a number but it has nothing to do with time as time is a human construction to make society function. It is even unclear if we have the right year number as they started counting from 1 and not zero and the same problem occurs when people not into football believes that a goal was scored after 30 seconds when in fact it was scored in the first minute. Anniversaries are celebrated when they are not anniversaries because people forget about zero and to start at one. Having a hang up on the number of a year and blaming that for problems says a lot about some peoples inability to shoulder responsibility for their own lives. That if something is a theme of late when solutions to problems are heaped onto people not even fit to tie their own shoelaces.

My boots have zippers, so I'm all set.

I certainly don't "blame" 2014 for the negative things that have occurred in my life during the calendar year, but tracking time is a totally normal, human thing to do. I don't believe that there's something intrinsically special about January that brings change, but if someone is helped psychologically by the knowledge that time is passing, that's not a negative thing. It's not about absolving myself of responsibility, it's about keeping a sense of my own mortality in check while facing the (symbolically) cleared slate that comes with a new year.
